Since it is lunch time and there are no good photographs of Floyd's Barber Shop (which is next to Snappy Lunch), I thought I would make Snappy Lunch, a diner in Mount Airy as this week's image of North Carolina.
The border town of Mount Airy (all of five miles from the Virginia state line) is known to most folks as 'Mayberry' since it is Andy Griffith's hometown and the town was the inspiration for "The Andy Griffith Show."
Griffith, who made a comeback of sorts in the independent film "Waitress" last year, still lives in North Carolina but he's quite a ways from Mount Airy (the town is also due north of Winston-Salem) as he is a resident of the Outer Banks villa of Manteo, a good day's drive from Mayberry.
I've only watched the show a handful of times since I was a kid, but it is still astonisgly popular in both the Roanoke (Va) and Greensboro markets. A friend of mine who works at WDBJ-7 in Roanoke said reruns of "The Andy Griffith Show" actually beat the local newscast of a rival station.
