A few years ago, veteran documentary filmmaker Les Blank came to our campus at Hollins University in Roanoke, Va. We have kept in touch, and I am a huge admirer of his work.
Alas, he comes to North Carolina on a weekend when I will be out of the state, but I want to promote his screening for those who might be in Winston-Salem area.
Blank will be showing his film "All in This Tea" (which he co-directed with Gina Leibrecht) at the The River Run Film Festival.
The screening times are Thurs., April 24 (8 p.m., Sawtooth), Fri., Apr. 25 (1 p.m., Main) and Sat., Apr. 26 (2:30 p.m., Reynolds).
The film, which I profiled in an entry a few months ago when the film had premiered in the San Francisco area, is a journey in which Blank takes us into the hidden world of tea as he follows world-renown tea expert David Lee Hoffman to remote, rural parts of China to find some of the best tea in the world.
Blank is known his unique films about filmmaking ("Burden of Dreams"), musicians ("The Blues According to Lightin' Hopkins") and food ("Garlic Is As Good as Ten Mothers"). Other films of his include "Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe" and "In Heaven, There is No Beer?," which depicts the life of polka musicians.
