Images of North Carolina- Old Shell Station in Winston-Salem

With gas prices reaching $3.40/barrell, all of us regardless of politics, race or religion, might well be feeling nostalgia for the good ole days when gas something like 34 cents/gallon.......or less!

This one-of-a-kind shell-shaped gas station was built circa 1930, and it still exists today (though one can't buy gas there) at its original location on the corners of Sprague and Peachtree streets in Winston-Salem........a town known for bringing America two of its most 'healthy' products (cigarettes and doughnuts_ as the city is the corporate home of R.J. Reynolds and Krispy Kreme respectively).

The station still stands thanks to the efforts of Preservation North Carolina.

L.L. "Fuzz" Everhart, who managed the station in the '30s and '40s, told oldgas.com that there is just no gas station that could replace this architectural gem:

"If it had fallen, it was just a piece of history that could never, ever be replaced."
