Though I'm not a Republican or a member of the National Rifle Association, as a devout "Planet of the Apes" fan, I feel it is important to devout a blog entry to Charlton Heston who died yesterday at age 84.
Heston starred in the 1968 "Planet of the Apes," and he made a cameo in Tim Burton's 2001 remake.
Everyone knows he was also Moses in "The Ten Commandments" and "Ben Hur."
But, you may not know that in spite of political differences he remained life-long friends with actor Gregory Peck who died in 2003. He was also hired by the FBI to be 'the voice of God' so that he could talk to David Koresh at the Branch Davidians compound in Waco, Texas, in 1993, but the rapid escalation of tragic events there prevented that plan from going into effect.
And, he was once 'one of us.'
Heston appeared on "The Joey Bishop Show" on June 18, 1968, along with Jimmy Stewart, Peck and Kirk Douglas to call for tighter gun control laws in the aftermath of Robert Kennedy's assasination. Ironically, 30 years later, he was named head of the NRA.
I found this quote which perhaps sums up his life better than any other:
"I have played three presidents, three saints and two geniuses. If that doesn't create an ego problem, nothing does."
There is also a tribute to Heston on my friend Christopher Knight's blog:
