"Leatherheads," the new period-piece comedy about the early days of football is generating a lot of excitement in North Carolina and South Carolina, as the film was primarily shot in these two states. The films opens nationally today.
In the Tarheel State, filming took place in Winston-Salem, Statesvile, Salisbury and Spencer, NC.
In the Palmetto State, filming took place in Anderson and Greenville, SC.
My friend Joe Scott has a great story of how he was invited by the film company (I believe it was Warner Bros.) to fly out to Los Angeles to talk with the film's three stars, George Clooney (also producer/director), Renee Zelwegger and John Kransinski from tv's "The Office."
"Leatherheads" also opens at the Grandin Theatre, which is run by good friend Jason Garnett, in Roanoke, Va.
The film should also be mentioned in my friend Moviezzz's blog today as he almost always has an entry about films opening over the weekend.
"Leatherheads" is recieving mixed reviews, but since Clooney coming off a stellar commercial and critical success from "Michael Clayton," this film should at least manage to open well at the box-office.
Interestingly enough, Edward R. Murrow, the late CBS broadcaster who is at the center of Clooney's last film as director ("Good Night, Good Luck") was born on a farm in Guilford County, just outside Greensboro and relatively close to Winston-Salem_ where "Leatherheads" was partially filmed.
"Junebug," the independent gem which launched the career of Amy Adams_ one of Moviezzz's favorite actresses, was also filmed in the Winston Salem, NC, area.
