Well, they are no longer showing "Kissing Jessica Stein," which came out in 2002, but this week The Varisty Theatre in Chapel Hill, NC, is showing the Academy-Award winner for Best Foreign Language Film "The Counterfeitters," which is an Austrian film about the Holocaust.
They are also showing the comedy "Smart People" with Dennis Quaid, which is also showing the Grandin Theatre in Roanoke, Va., which is managed by my friend Jason Garnett.
The Varsity is a historic cinema and it was made famous when Katie Holmes walked by it in an episode of "Dawson's Creek." Of course, she was not known as the annoying wife of Tom Cruise back then!
The cinema is on East Franklin Street, which is the street where Tarheel basketball fans gather before and after UNC games.
The street, which still maintains its charm despite the presence of one too many Starbucks, is also where one can find a great Turkish restaurant in Talulla's. This is where one can munch on a lahmachun (Turkish pizza).
And, in close proximity, there is the ever-nifty Chapel Hill Comics, which is managed by the comic-savvy Andrew Neal whom I had the pleasure of meeting back in November. If you haven't collected comics since "Howard the Duck" concluded its initial run (circa 1979), I'm sure Mr. Neal will be able to fill you in.
