Penelope Cruz, the Spanish actress who was nominated for an Oscar in "Volver," turns 34 today, which means that she is now the same age as my sister Lale.
Cruz has starred in some inferior American films like "Vanilla Sky" (which was a remake of the Spanish film "Open Your Eyes.") The film lead to her romance with co-star Tom Cruise. Apparently, Penelope wasn't too interested in L. Ron Hubbard so he opted for Katie Holmes instead! Cruz is alas dating Javier Bardem now as well.
To celebrate her birthday, I thought I would see how many degrees of separation she is from two presidential candidates who have made motion picture cameos (Barack Obama so far has not).
Cruz is three degrees removed from Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. The former first lady was in "The Final Days" (2000) with Kevin Spacey who was in "Austin Powers in Goldmember" (2002) with Danny DeVito who was in "The Good Night" (2007) with Cruz.
Cruz is a mere two degrees removed from Sen. John McCain. He was in "Wedding Crashers" (2005) with singer/actor Dwight Yoakam who was in "Bandidas" (2006) with Cruz.
