Four Quotes from Four Dead Poets

"A great city is that which has the greatest men and women," Walt Whitman.

"Hope is the thing with weathers that perches in the soul_ and sings the tunes without the words and never stops at all," Emily Dickinson.

"However and whereever we are, we must live as if we will never die," Nazim Hikmet (1901-1963).  He is considered to be Turkey's great poet.*

"Humor is laughing at yourself at what you haven't got when you ought to have it," Langston Hughes.

April is National Poetry Month in the United States.

*Though often arrested for his communist beliefs, Hikmet is now even refered by the Turkish government. Hikmet died in exile, and he is buried at Moscow's famed Novodevichy Cemetery. A Turkish biopic film about Hikmet's life entitled "Mavi Gozlu Dev/ Blue-Eyed Giant" was released in Turkey in 2007.
