My Poem: "Prince Charles"

There are those of you who will enjoy this entry. Others of you may cringe as I lack the poetic talents of Kammal Ayyildiz, a fellow Turkish-American from Roanoke, Va. (yes, there are about four of us), who is an exceptional, published poet as is his mother Judy Light Ayyildiz.

But, I did write this poem, which is simply titled "Prince Charles" for No Shame Theatre in Roanoke, Va., last week. I later read it during a writer's meeting in the Greensboro area. Amazingly enough a Republican friend of mine (yes, there are at least four of them), said (paraphrase) after hearing my poem: "You know you and I don't agree on anything, but we both like Prince Charles."

Here it is:

"Prince Charles"

Perhaps some people are not as bad as their reputation

Ie. Hillary Clinton

Perhaps some people are

Ie. Dick Cheney

Then, there are those we can never be sure about.

Enter the Prince of Wales.

One has to consider his domineering mother,

She is after all the queen.

Craig Ferguson can make fun of him all he wants,

But he has probably been tortured more times than an Arab in Cuba.

Can you imagine having Queen Elizabeth as your mother?

How awful that must be!

He might actually prefer being homeless in Philadelphia,

Or in bed with Larry Craig.

But, no one gives a damn about Prince Charles,

Everyone thinks his wife Diana was golden........

And, that his sons are perfect,

But, everyone still hates Prince Charles........

They say he's a good polo player, and he has written a children's book.

Perhaps, there is a side of him that none of us know.

For all his wealth, he is a man who stands in the shadows of his mom.

He just can't seem to get away from her.

I can imagine him flying to give food to children in Ethiopia,

And on the plane behind him, there is his mother.

Waiting to steal the spotlight from him,

One more time.
