"There aren't many pieces of work, especially in film, that have the
patience or the longevity or the time to honor the drama of ordinary
life; and after all, the drama of what we all have to go through --
children, jobs, marriage, the things that touch us -- is the big drama
of life, far more so than the drama of movies and television."
                                                     --Filmmaker Michael Apted

In one of documentary cinema's more remarkable enterprises,
"49 Up" makes its U.S. broadcast premiere as the seventh in a
series of films that has profiled a group of English children every
seven years, beginning in 1964. Renowned director Michael
Apted (Coal Miner's Daughter, Gorky Park, Gorillas in the Mist)
has doggedly pursued the series as the children have grown into
adults, navigating the divide between childhood dreams and adult
realities. "49 Up" revisits questions of love, marriage, career, class
and prejudice -- discovering unexpected turns in individual lives
and surprising views of the Up film series itself.

"THE UP SERIES is on my list of the ten greatest films of all time."
- Roger Ebert

"One of the most remarkable experiments in the history of cinema."
- A.O. Scott, The New York Times

"Grade: A. '49 Up' is a precious document, and must viewing..."
- Entertainment Weekly

"One of the supreme creations of documentary filmmaking. Riveting."
- Salon.com

"Moving and ambitious in scale like nothing else in cinema."
- The Village Voice

The "49 Up" companion website
offers a video trailer of the film,
an interview with the filmmaker (video, podcast and text); a list of
related websites, organizations and books; a discussion guide and
classroom activity; and the following special features:
