Hitchcock Film at the Carolina Theatre in Greensboro

A  few years ago I had the chance to introduce Alfred Hitchcock's 1959 masterpiece "North by Northwest" at the Grandin Theatre in Roanoke, Va.

I had an earlier opportunity to see this film on the big screen at the Virginia Film Festival in Charlottesville a few years befoe that, but I had passed it up to see an experimental film by James Benning. I enjoyed Benning's film, but having seen Eva Marie Saint at the Omni Hotel/Charlottesville just hours after the "North by Northwest" screening, I began to question my choice.

Now everyone in Greensboro, NC, and surrounding areas can take in the classic_ unless they have to work that night, like me!

The film will be shown on Tues., Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m., with a $5 admission fee.

The Grandin Theatre will be screening their own historic film this weekend as a live orchestra accompanies a screening of the 1926 Buster Keaton classic "The General" on Sunday for an admission fee of $10.

"North by Northwest" ranks as the 23rd highest rated film in the Internet Movie Database. It has an 8.9 (out of 10) rating.

The plot has a middle-aged Madison Avenue advertising executive named Roger O. Thornhill (Cary Grant) at the center of its plot. Thronhill is mistaken for a government agent by a gang of spies. He gets involved in a series of misadventures and is pursued across the country by both spies and the government.

The aforementioned Saint co-stars in the film along with James Mason and a very young Martin Landau.

According to the IMDB, MGM wanted to cast Cyd Charisse for the part of Eve Kendall, but Hitch insisted on Saint. He never looked back.
