Remembering a Remarkable Turkish Student

These are the sort of entries that are always painful to post.

I believe I had the pleasure of meeting Can Geyran on at least one or two occasions.

He was the vice president of the Turkish Students Association at Virginia Tech, headed by Mehmet Can Ege.

On Sunday night, Can died of an apparent heart attack at the age of 21 at Montgomery Regional Hospital in Christiansburg, Va., around 7 p.m. He was rushed to the hospital when he told his friends that he was not feeling well.

His parents were expected to fly in from Istanbul to Roanoke tonight (Monday).

There is a scheduled service for Can at the Cranwell Center on the Virginia Tech campus at 9 a.m., Tuesday morning.

All of this early information, which is subject to change, is from email servers.

I will add any details, regarding memorials and condolences or rememberances about Cem, as they become available.

Can was an economics major, and he had just recently turned 21.

I have been a strong supporter of the TSA at Virginia Tech for many years. They put together events for the Turkish community in Blacksburg and arrange a Street Fair booth each spring.

In recent years, there has also been a Turkish music program on the Virginia Tech radio station, WUVT-FM. This always brings back fond memories because my friend Bahadir Acuner, now of Seattle, Wa., and I co-hosted a Turkish music show on WUVT in 1994.

My sincerest condolences go out to Can Geyran's friends, family and the entire Turkish student community at Virginia Tech. As we say in Turkish: "Hepinize, basiniz sagolun diliyorum."
