Message from Bill Richardson, My Choice for President

Bill Richardson for President
Bill Richardson is 'Unbeatable' Can you support his campaign today?

Dear Attila,

Do you remember the sick feeling in your chest when you learned that George Bush had "beaten" Al Gore in 2000 as a result of Katherine Harris's political shenanigans in Florida and the intervention of the Supreme Court?

Or how about the overwhelming feeling of disappointment you felt when, between the "Swift Boat Veterans" sliming of John Kerry and voter intimidation in Ohio, George Bush was reelected in another squeaker in 2004?

Well, get ready to feel that way all over again in 2008 if the Democrats nominate another presidential candidate who can't overcome Republican dirty tricks and fear-mongering.

Sad to say, our country is just as divided today as it was in 2000 and 2004. And the Republicans are going to play just as dirty in 2008.

Only one candidate has the record to stand up to Republican scare tactics and smear campaigns.   Bill Richardson -- a fiscally responsible Governor from the West who has cut taxes and balanced budget while increasing investments in health care and education -- cannot be portayed as a tax and spend liberal.

A recent Zogby poll showed that more Americans -- Democrat and Republican -- would consider voting for Bill Richardson than any other candidate of either party.

And political guru and University of Virginia professor Larry Sabato, who has an unmatched record at predicting races, says, "Republicans will tell you privately that if the Democrats nominate Bill Richardson, the election is over. They know they will lose to Bill Richardson."

That's why you and I have to pull out all the stops to make sure he wins in Iowa and New Hampshire -- because we must shake our country loose from the grip of the extreme right and the neo-cons who have done so much damage over the past seven years.

Your generous contribution today -- $40 or even $80 -- will help make sure Bill finishes strong in these early states and keeps building momentum all the way to the convention.

Nothing would make the Republicans happier than the opportunity to run against the other Democratic candidates in the general election. You can be sure they are already crafting their messages of fear and distortion to confuse voters and smear these candidates.

If we're going to win the White House, we need a candidate that the right wing can't lay a glove on.

Bill Richardson is the only candidate with a clear, cohesive plan on Iraq that would bring home all our troops right away. And he has the credentials to deliver on that plan. Compared to his experience, his leadership, and his vision, the Republicans have no one who can stack up against him.

Larry Sabato is right. If Bill Richardson is nominated, Giuliani, Romney, or Thompson will stand up to Bill Richardson's appeal. If he's not, it's going to be 2000 and 2004 all over again.

Make a generous contribution of $40 or even $80 right now so that we can keep Bill's campaign firing on all cylinders -- and make sure the voters in Iowa and New Hampshire all get his message.

We and every other Democrat have to start thinking about next November now. If we're clear about our goals then, we'll be clear about what we have to do in January and February now.

Sincerely,

Dave Contarino

P.S. If you'll be watching Bill in tonight's Democratic debate, you can join our online chat and be part of our virtual debate watching party. And if you contribute right now, we'll be able to put your money to use tomorrow, distributing video of Bill's best debate lines!

BLACKOUT RFK on Thursday for D.C. vs. Chicago

Personal Note from Tilly Gokbudak: Here is to the hope that my favorite American soccer team DC United will join the Boston Red Sox in winning their respective championship.

My favorite Turkish soccer team GalataSaray (Istanbul) beat DenizliSpor on a 90th minute penalty kick in Denizli, Turkey, to win 2-1. They have now moved ahead of SivasSpor to take first place in the Turkish Premiere League.

DC United lost game one to the Chicago Fire 1-0. That game was played last week at Soldier's Field in "The Windy City."

Thursday's game will be televised nationally on ESPN 2.

Update (Nov.3): Ok, so DC United lost the game.........there is always the hope that Duke University will actually win a game when they face the Clemson Tigers in college football today.........oh yeah, I forgot, that game was played earlier today. Never mind!

The Limits of America's Global Pop Culture Influence

I just recieved a Facebook message from a friend of mine named Mehmet in Ankara, Turkey.

He shocked me when he revealed that he did not know who actress Uma Thurman ("Pulp Fiction," "Prime") was! I was wondering how could anyone not know who one of the most gorgeous women in the world was........I am still thinking that maybe Mehmet was pulling my leg.

Then, it dawned on me that very Americans have heard of Turkish international pop phenom Tarkan, who is even (supposedly) popular in Yerevan, Armenia!

I suppose one day our global impact on pop culture could be considerably nulified, and perhaps that is already happening!

It is after all our pop culture which has sustained our country's global influence around the world, even at times when our government was not popular (as it is now under the dubious leadership of George W. Bush).

Amazingly enough, our pop culture has even been cited by our deepest enemies. I read a magazine article in which Osama had apparently said that "Bonanza" was his favorite tv show. To this day, I find that revealation highly disturbing.

Red Sox Win World Series!

Personal Note from Tilly Gokbudak: My sister lives in Colorado, so he will probably hate me for posting this, but I don't think she visits this blog all that often. Congrats to Manny Ramierz and the rest of The Boston Red Sox! It's hard to believe that they did not win a World Series from 1918 until 2004, and now they have just won their second title.

Happy Halloween! (Pumpkinhead Quotes)

I was hoping to post a youtube video of the classic film "Drakula Istanbulda/Dracula in Istanbul," which came out in the 1950s! But, I had a major distraction. Hopefully, I will have it posted in not too distant future.

In the meantime, here is quote from the 1989 horror film "Pumpkinhead," directed by special effects wizard Stan Winston ("Jurassic Park," "Aliens.") I was fortunate enough to meet him one year at the Virginia Film Festival.

The latest Virginia Film Festival starts Thursday in Charllotesville.

I wish I could devote an entire blog entry to it. But, I'm expecting a very, very busy week and I don't think I will make it to C'ville this year, though I have been to all but three Virginia Film Festivals since 1990.......of course, it was easier to get there when I was living in Virginia.

For those living near the coast, I understand there is a cool graveyard in Wilmington, NC. Surely my uncle Eric Robinson of Florida, who has a hobby of walking through old graveyards would love that! This particular graveyard in Wilmington offers tours at night this time of the year. But, I can't go to Wilmington either.

Here is quote from the screenplay to "Pumpkinhead," courtesy of the Internet Movie Database. This scene takes place after Pumpkinhead, which came to life after.......it's a long story.......is really starting to kill people:

Tracy: Can't you stop this? Can't you call it off?

Ed Harley: Nuthin' can call it off.........

(lights flamethrower)

Ed Harley (contd): ........but I'm gonna send it back to wherever the Hell it came from!

Turkey's Best Pop Culture Icon Is?

In honor of Republic's Day, which is Oct. 29th, I am setting a poll between Turkey's best-known pop music icon Tarkan and singer/actress Sezen Aksu, whom some have refered to as "The Turkish Madonna." But, to my knowledge Aksu has never used four-letter words on national television.

If you are not of Turkish heritage, feel free to vote anyway. Of course, this is coming from someone who loves polls. I just can't get enough of them. Republic's Day is the closest thing to a Turkish Fourth of July.

Travel Trivia

I thought I would throw in this short, simple entry to keep the blog moving. I believe I saw this in an online edition of "The Washington Post," and in all probability, it was in the Travel Section.

Which city has the world's largest subway system?

A) Paris

B) London

C) New York

D) Munich

And, the answer is..............

The City with the Sherlock Holmes Museum........if George W. Bush is visiting this blog, that means London!:)

The Bigots of Davidson County

I had a letter-to-the-editor published in Friday's edition of the Greensboro paper "The News-Record."

My letter dealt with my opposition to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Armenian Bill she is co-sponsoring in Congress. It should be noted that I am a Democrat, and I also criticized George W. Bush for the invasion of Iraq, which has helped destabilize several countries in the region, including Turkey.

While I am a Turkish-American and ethnic politics are generally uglier than an episode of "Real World Sydney," I try to handle these matters in a civil fashion. I even read columns by Armenian-American journalist Appo Jabarian, even though we have many disagreements for a glimpse of their perspective. I fully respect the fact that Jabarian does not stoop to the lowest common denominator, and his articles, however much I disagree with them, are from a journalistic view, well-written and articulate.

But, that can't be said for all people who have a shisk kebab to skew with Turkey.

Beneath my diplomatic letter was a hate-filled, racist column by one Jack Stratas of Denton, NC. Here are some of the remarks he made, which clearly illustrate a right-wing extremist. Sadly, the man is a Greek-American- though he probably hasn't been to Greece since "Never on Sunday" came out in 1966.

I have many Greek friends, and I enjoy dinning at The Acropolis in Greensboro, but this man clearly jumps to conclusions about all of us on the other side of the Aegean. Here are some excerpts of his insanity (in no way should this be understood for my views!):

"The patriarch of the Eastern Orthodox Church is made to reside in a dusty complex in Istanbul, a virtual captive of Muslim Turks"...

"Throughout history, the Turkish government has shown an animosity against Christians, much as the News & Record".................

"In his book, 'The Blight of Asia,' Edward Horton, a retired U.S. General in that area, lists atrocities committed by Ottoman Turks against Christians. The butcher's bill is............(yea, we get the picture).

Wait, there's more:

"No one knows for sure how many Greek Christians were slaughtered, but we do know from pictures (what about Wikipedia?) that they were killed or driven into the sea, and the city (Izmir, which he called Smryna....of course!) burned to the ground. (Love this part!) This is a fact."

He goes on to say that there is a web site called "Blight of Asia." Hmmm, yeah there are also web sites for the KKK and Islamic extremist Jihadis. And, he adds in this one instance, he agrees with the Democrats!

Thank you, Nancy............:)

But, I should also thank this blockhead for he does illustrate my deepest concerns at a very profound level.

I am also shocked that "The News & Record," a paper I respect (unlike this guy) would publish some racist, extreme garbage which should be taken to the Davidson County Dump in response to my letter.

I have to wonder if this paper, or any other, would publish a column by David Duke in response to an articulate letter by an African-American, or a letter from a radical anti-semite in response to commentary from a person who is Jewish.

The answer is clearly no, and that is the short and simple reason why those of us in the Turkish-American community always find common ground on the matters which unite us above and beyond the political/social differences (which can be vast) when they threaten to divide us most.

I also read the following line by someone who commented about my letter online: "I am married to a Greek woman, and trust me, it's never too late to hate the Turks."

If the needless shooting of ethnic Armenian journalist Hrant Dink in Istanbul by a radical Turkish nationalist youth last year proved anything, it is that this form of hatred however ludicrious has to be taken seriously. Many Turkish people poured into the streets during Dink's funeral, but assuredly everyone forgot about that the very next day.

Hatred is a virus that does not know any race, creed, or religion. I hope one day another Turkish-American will be allowed to write a letter-to-the-editor without a response that is essentially nothing more than a spit in the face. Aside from that, I am thankful that "The News & Record" published my letter.

In short, the ulimate question is the Congressional effort to recognize a contested, painful matter for both Turks and Armenians alike about history, or is it really about politics?

With all due respect, and I sincerely mean that, to Armenian-Americans, I think the answer to that question is clearly: "Politics, Alex."

"The Darjeeling Limited" Opens at the Grandin Theatre (Roanoke, Va.)

Alas, I went back to Roanoke last weekend. It is actually 'dumping buckets' in both Virginia and North Carolina today, which is ironic because both states (as well as Maryland, South Carolina, Georgia....) have been in a major drought.

This latest offering from Wes Anderson ("Rushmore") is a road movie that goes through India. "People" magazine panned this film, so that means it has to be worth while!

The Grandin Theatre, which opened in the 1930s, is along with the Byrd Theatre in Richmond, one of the oldest operating cinemas in the Old Dominion. I believe the Grandin is also hosting a midnight screening of the 1982 film "Poltergeist" this weekend for Halloween.

Written and produced by the three, the film follows three brothers played by Owen Wilson, Adrian Brody and Jason Schwartzman on a life-altering trip to India. Across the Universe

Across the Universe
An original musical film, Across The Universe is a fictional love story set in the 1960s amid the turbulent years of anti-war protest, the struggle for free speech and civil rights, mind exploration and rock and roll. At once gritty, whimsical and highly theatrical, the story moves from high schools and universities in Massachusetts, Princeton and Ohio to the Lower East Side of Manhattan, the Detroit riots, Vietnam and the dockyards of Liverpool. A combination of live action and animation, the film is paired with many songs by The Beatles that defined the time.

A former criminal prosecutor, Clayton takes care of Kenner, Bach & Ledeen's dirtiest work at the behest of the firm's co-founder Marty Bach (SYDNEY POLLACK). Though burned out and hardly content with his job as a fixer, his divorce, a failed business venture and mounting debt have left Clayton inextricably tied to the firm. At U/North, meanwhile, the career of litigator Karen Crowder (TILDA SWINTON) rests on the multi-million dollar settlement of a class action suit that Clayton's firm is leading to a seemingly successful conclusion. But when Kenner Bach's brilliant and guilt-ridden attorney Arthur Edens (TOM WILKINSON) sabotages the U/North case, Clayton faces the biggest challenge of his career and his life
