Sierra Leone's All Stars Now on DVD

There are some entries that I never get to. I was initially going to post about this back in August!

"Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars" should give viewers more insight into the terrible violence that ravaged the West African country starting in the late 1990s. The problems were depicted in the fictional film "Blood Diamond," but this film will undoubtedly be more stark in nature. Though the film itself deals with a musical band which formed in the process.

The film aired on the PBS documentary series "POV" over the summer. I have also noticed that there were special screenings for it in Rockland, Maine, and Winston-Salem, NC, and assuredly there have been many others across the country.

The documentary tells the story of these musicians who met in a refugee camp after being forced from their homes in the civil war.

The film has been available on dvd since Aug. 14. Red Envelope Entertainment (Netflix) will donate one dollar to ninemillion.org, and organization which gives charity money to children in refugee camps.

I also want to point out that the violence in Sierra Leone was a major concern for Cong. Frank Wolf (R-Va) and he traveled to that country many times when I knew him as a reporter in Woodstock, Va., from 1999-2001. Like my own district representative Cong. Brad Miller (D-NC), Wolf is very dedicate to the current crisis in Darfur, Sudan as well.
