A Virginia Ham is Heading to Topeka

As reporter earlier in this blog, Virginia Governor Tim Kaine made a bet with fellow Democratic governor Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas on the Orange Bowl football game in Miami.
Kaine said that if the Kansas Jayhawks upset the Virginia Tech that he would send her a Virginia ham.
For her part, the Kansas governor promised beef from the Sunflower State if the Hokies prevailed.
Well, Kansas won the game 24-21 tonight. So, Gov. Sebelius will get a ham!
Perhaps, she will share some of it with a local homeless shelter in Topeka, Kan.:)
But, Virginia Tech's football team nevertheless had a remarkable year which included an ACC championship. Considering the tragic events that the community in Blacksburg, Va., faced in April, it was good to see something positive occur for Virginia Tech.
Hokie U is the alma mater for many of my friends and family.
I went to nearby Radford University, where I graduated from in 1996.
While RU does not have a football team, the Highlanders will play my cousin Michael Dawkins' alma Winthrop University, from Rock Hill, SC, on Jan.19 at the Dedmon Center in Radford, Va.
Everyone should have faith in their school, but I don't think I'll be offering to send the Dawkins family a ham. Winthrop, a school that has become a Big South Conference powerhouse, beat the Univeristy of Miami  Hurricanes in a major upset a few weeks ago.
So, no ham this year!
Sorry, Mike....
