The Endorsements- Edwards (D) and Paul (R)

It may come as a bit of a surprise to those of you who have read this blog for a while to learn that a few weeks ago, I switched my political allegiance from New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson to former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards.
The fact that Richardson is still polling at around four percent in Iowa, and Edwards is showing an exceptional amount of fortitude and determination have made me decide Edwards is the person I would vote for tomorrow if I lived in Cedar Rapids.
Similarly, on the Republican side- though it is not my party of choice, I feel I should endorse Cong. Ron Paul (R-Tx) for the nomination because of his willingness to expose the hypocrisy of the ill-conceived fiasco which is the War in Iraq (or the Mess in Mesopotamia).
The Iowa Caucus is the focus of many newspapers today. The John Edwards campaign is the feature of articles in "The Des Moines Register" and "The Charlotte Observer" respectively.
The 'Register' reports that Marcia Fulton came out to an Edwards rally because she is impressed by his determination. Fulton, who ironically retired to Iowa from Florida, was split between Richardson and Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.) but she is now considering jumping on the Edwards bandwagon. The article by Tony Leys in the Iowa newspaper also reported that the former senator had only one major mishap in his 36-hour straight campaign across the state. It occurred in Council Bluffs when the campaign bus The Main Street Express had mechanical problems.
"The Charlotte Observer" featured an article by Jim Morrill reporting from Iowa about the role of Elizabeth Edwards in the campaign. MeLinda Madison told the Charlotte newspaper that she was so impressed by her struggles with breast cancer that she was switching political parties to support John Edwards. Madison, 31, is also a breast cancer survivor.
In the Paul camp, Adam Kirscher, 23, a student of Ozark Christian College, told "The Washington Post" that campaigning for Ron Paul in Des Moines has been a positive experience though the down time is being spent by watching "Transformers" on dvd as opposed to social activities. Kirscher told features reporter Libby Copeland that was ok because he did not decide to volunteer for Paul to meet women.
Personally, I know of two people who are very supportive of Paul. They include my friend Christopher Knight of Reidsville, NC, who has been involved with independent filmmaking, and my cousin Patrick Dawkins of Rock Hill, SC, who isa freshman at Winthrop University.
If the two were to actually be the nominees, I would support Edwards in the general election. But, it would be great to see Paul pull off an amazing upset by toppling the GOP establishment..........it might even surpass the fall of Baghdad!
The Edwards campaign is based in Chapel Hill, NC, and they are looking for volunteers for the South Carolina primary, which will be held at the end of the month.
The impact of the Iowa Caucus is also having an affect on the arts. A Des Moines theatre is currently producing a musical called "Caucus!," which like the real thing has received an abundance of national attention.
