Aaron Blake of "The Hill" reported from West Des Moines, Iowa, today that Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, who appears to be losing the Iowa Caucuses to rival Mike Huckabee tonight, is using the l-word LOVE when talking about President George W. Bush.
In his defense of an embattled president, Romney is taking a risky strategy as the president only has support in the low-30s in the Hawkeye state. This strategy is in sharp contrast to what other Republicans, including Huckabee, have chosen to do so far.
And, Romney is vocal and open for his support of the president:
"We're a a nation united that stands behind our fighting men and women. We honor and respect them," Romney said (according to "The Hill"). "We love what they're doing for us, and we also love a president who has kept us safe for these last six years."
"The Des Moines Register" reported that more independent voters were choosing to participate in Democratic caucuses. The newspaper quoted Dominic Sweeney, 65, and independent from Zwigle, Iowa, who tended to vote more Republican. Sweeney told "The Register" that he would be participating in a Democratic caucus for the very first time.
The retired computer programmer said he lost a retirement account worth $200,000 after being laid off and he lost a nephew to a roadside bomb in Iraq. Sweeney said both of these events had a major impact on his life, and conversely his view of the world.
Terry Nelson, a Republican strategist, told veteran political reporter Dan Balz of "The Washington Post" that a Huckabee, which seems to be a done deal (as of 9:30 p.m.) would cause a major shift for the GOP.
"If Huckabee wins the result will confuse the Republican nomination, rather than clarify it."
