On our sister blog "The Daily Vampire," we quoted Franklin Pierce, the 14th American president. Pierce hailed from New Hampshire; President Calvin Coolidge, the 30th president who served from 1923-29, hailed from the neighboring state of Vermont. Thus, ironically, Coolidge, who is among the most conservative of 20th century presidents, hailed from what is now one of the most liberal states in the union.
Coolidge was not elected into office initially as he replaced his predecessor Warren Harding, who died in office (see previous entry). Coolidge's veep was Charles Dawes. Today, there is a memorial to Coolidge in Plymouth, Vermont.
Coolidge is also the subject of a biography entitled "The Forgotten Man" by conservative author and columnist Amity Shlaes, which received a positive review from "The Washington Post."
Here is the quote from Coolidge: "We cannot do everything at once, but we can do something at once."
