Remembering Prince with Our 10 Favorite Songs By Him....

Like the rest of the world, we were stunned to hear about the death of the iconic pop star Prince (1958-2016) at the age of 57. At first, we actually thought Prince Charles, who is 76, had died and that the person telling me of Prince's death had left out the word 'Charles.'

In honor of Prince, we are posting a list of our ten favorite songs by him. He also penned "Manic Monday" for The Bangles and "Nothing Compares 2 U" for Sinead O'Connor:

Greetings to our blog readers in Germany, India and Peru......

Yesterday, we actually had a hit from the Afican nation of Malawi!

We also want to send a special morning greeting to those of you checking us out from San Diego, Calif., where is now 8: 48 a.m. (does anyone actually work in southern Cali?)

Normally, we looked at the last ten songs played on Steve-FM in Roanoke, Va., but as it turns out there is also a Stev-FM in Columbia, SC! They are both owned by the national communications conglomerate I Heart Radio, but they do not play the same songs at the same time (Javier the Intern verified this for us!).........

Today also happens to be World Radio Day.........

One of the songs which grabbed our attention in this playlist was "Black Velvet" by Canadian Alannah Myles, a smash hit back in 1989! We haven't heard it much in recent years. Myles never had another major hit here in the United States, but she still apparently maintains a loyal following up north.

Another import "Listen to Your Heart" from Roxette, a Swedish musical group, made the playlist, but no songs form Turkish pop star Tarkan, who once tried to record songs in English!

As the title of our entry suggests, we aren't exactly sure what Bruno Mars songs sound like, but we are trying to get hip to it.....

Quote of the Day- Sinead O'Connor

Today, we are featuring quotes from famous people from Ireland, and today's quip comes from the always interesting and controversial figure who is singer Sinead O'Connor, who came to fame with her version of the song "Nothing Compares 2 U," which is written by Prince.

O'Connor battled breast cancer and in a 2009 blog entry on a breast cancer site, she said that she had lost six pounds after going through several rounds of chemotherapy.

The Irish singer, who is now 43, toured mostly European countries including Slovakia, Italy and Spain last summer in addition to an artistic trek through China.

These comments below were made in regards (we believe) right before a concert that she was to give in Jerusalem, Israel, in 1997, but things didn't go according to plan:

"I cannot put in danger the lives of my two children, my musicians, and my technicians, so I have decided to cancel this concert."

Speaking of controversy, the issue of where our food comes from will be broached again tonight.

The Current-tv series "Kill It! Cook It! Eat It!," which is a British show that airs at 10 p.m. New York time tonight focuses on the killing and eating of growse, a wild game bird.

Participants in the episode will either hunt and kill the bird, while others, like vegeterian contestants, debate the ethics of such a practice. They will gather in the Scottish Highlands during tonight's show for the growse hunt. The bird is apparently available in America as well, particulary in New England states such as Vermont.

PSA- Be Nice to Jehovah's Witnesses

Much to my shock, I found out that Prince is a Jehovah's Witness which is perhaps even more startling than Cat Stevens' conversion to Islam (and, he became a fundamentalist one at that.)

Apparently, Prince also puts on a disguise and goes door-to-door in a disguise and asks folks if they want to a subsription to "The Watchtower."

Protelytizing can actually be quite dangerous as one was killed in Newport News, Va. And, on May 13, Robert Riley Gonzales, 34, allegedly shot to death Kenneth Mort, 48, at a Kingdom Hall in Lowell, Mass.
