Olympic Cities Distance Quiz (3 of 6)- Barcelona to Beijing

Today, we head from Barcelona, Spain, where they are likely still in jubilation after defeating Italy 4-0 in the Euro 2012 Soccer Cup, to Beijing, China, where James Fallows of "The Atlantic" seems to spend a lot of time (forgive the frequent magazine reader humor).

The 1992 Barcelona Olympics were the ones which featured the Dream Team which represented the United States. The team which featured Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan beat the African nation of Angola 116-48 in one preliminary game, but hopefully the Angolans got some autographs afterwards.

In women's gymnastics in Barcelona, Tatiana Gutsu of Romania edged American gymnast Shannon Miller for all-around individual gold; Russian swimmers Alexander Popov (pictured) and Yevgeny Sadovyi won five gold medals between them.

At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, American gymnast Nastia Liukin (pictured here) edged out teammate Shawn Johnson for all-around individual gold; American swimmer Michael Phelps won eight gold medals?!

Quote of the Day/Week-Nastia Liukin

Today, we get back to quoting American athletes who won either or both gold and silver medals at the summer Olympics with a quote from Nastia Liukin, 22. Amazingly enough, her mother, former Soviet/Russian rhythmic gymnast Anna Kotchava, 42, is only six weeks older than me. Her father Valeri Liukin, 45, a former Soviet/Kazakh gymnast who won gold at the 1988 Seoul Olympics is Nastia's coach.

According to the May 15th edition of "The Inqusitir," Nastia Liukin, a native of Texas, intends to compete at the Olympic women's gymnastics team trials in San Jose, Calif., on June 28th. Those trials will determine which gymnasts get to compete at the 2012 London Olympics.

Here is Nastia's quote; we presume it's in regards to the 2008 Beijing Olympics (Shawn Johnson was one of her Olympic teammates) where she won gold:

"I think it's going to be a little more exciting and a little more confusing."

Olympic Cities Distance Quiz (1 of 6) Athens to London

Today, we begin a six-part series on the distances between various cities which have hosting the Olympic Games. As of this summer, London, England/U.K., will be the first city to host the games three times. The previous two times were in 1900 and 1948.

Athens, Greece, has hosted the modern summer Olympics twice, including the initial games in 1896 and in 2004.

American swimmer Ann Curtis who won gold in women's 400 meter free-style swimming back during the 1948 Olympics is still alive at age 86.

The American delegation sent 300 athletes to the 1948 Olympics.

In 2004, there were significantly more American athletes in the field as 536 athletes were sent to Greece. Among them were Misty May and Kerri Walsh who won gold in women's beach volleyball.

So, what is the distance between Athens, Greece, and London, England; is the answer:

A) 1,466 miles

B) 1,476 miles

C) 1,486 miles

D) 1,496 miles

Quote of the Day/Week-Toni Kukoc

Today, we conclude our series of quotes from Olympic athletes who won either gold or silver medals at the Summer Olympics with a quip from Croatian basketball player Toni Kukoc, who was also an instrumental supporting player during the Chicago Bulls championship run of the 1990s.

Kukoc, now 43, won silver with the Yugoslavian national team at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, but just four years later, after a bitter civil war erupted which meant that Serbia, Slovenia and Croatia would each would have separate Olympic teams in every sport, Kukoc won silver again only this time it was for Croatia. Ironically, the team that defeated Croatia was the Dream Team of the United States which was captained by Michael Jordan, who would be Kukoc's teammate with the Bulls.

Here is Kukoc's quote:

"If you are physically ready to play, it's a matter of confidence. Your confidence goes down when you lose games, when shots are not going in."

Quote of the Day/Week-Hiroyuki Tomita

Today, we continue quoting international Olympic athletes who won either gold or silver medals with a quip from Japanese gymnast Hiroyuki Tomita, 31, who won three gold medals over two Olympics (2004 Athens Olympics; 2008 Beijing Olympics).

Tomita helped Japan win its first team gold medal at the 2004 games since the 1976 Montreal Olympics.

Here is his quote:

"I aim for the beautiful artistic gymnastics that would remain in people's memories rather than winning a medal."

We are quoting these athletes in honor of the upcoming 2012 London Olympics.

Quote of the Day/Week-Olga Korbut

Today, in honor of the upcoming 2012 London Olympics, we are quoting the great Belorussian gymnast Olga Korbut who competed for the Soviet Union in the 1972 Munich Olympics and again at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, which saw the emergence of Romanian gymnastics star Nadia Comaneci. Korbut, 56, who now lives in Arizona, won four gold medals and two silvers during her Olympic career.

We quoted Korbut back in November when we were quoting famous Russians. We quickly saw on Korbut's Wikipedia page that we had whoops!, made a major mistake. Today, Belarus and Russia are two separate countries.

We begin with the great Usein Bolt of Jamaica. Bolt, 25, won three gold medals in sprinting at the 2008 Beijing Olympics:

"I blew my mind and I blew the world's mind."

Bonus Quote of the Week- Sugar Ray Leonard

Today, we conclude our month-long series of quotes from American athlete who won medals at the Summer Olympics with quote from boxing great Sugar Ray Leonard, 55, who won gold at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Earlier this month, we quoted Bruce Jenner, the decathlete who also won gold in Canada.

Leonard was born in Rocky Mount, NC, but he spent most of his growing years in Palmer Park, Maryland, in the DC-Metro area. Leonard defeated the Cuban boxer Andrew Aldama on his way to gold in the light welterweight division.

Ironically, Montreal was also the site of his first famous bout with Panamanian boxer Roberto Duran in 1980. Leonard lost that initial fight, but he defeated Duran later that year in New Orleans.

Leonard also won a much-anticipated bout against a then-undefeated Thomas Hearns in Las Vegas in 1981.

Here is Leonard's quote:

Quote of the Day/Week- Janet Evans

Since we quoted the swimming great Mark Spitz on our sister blog "The Daily Vampire," we thought we'd stay in the pool and quip Janet Evans, 41, is amazingly enough training for the 2012 London Olympics.

Evans first achieved prominence 25 years ago, and she won three gold medals and set a new world's record in the 400-meter free-style at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Evans went on to win another gold at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. In total, Evans has won five medals, including one silver.

She was profiled on the NPR sports show "Only a Game" about her remarkable comeback efforts at a time when she is also busy being a wife and a mother.

It was hard to find a quote from Evans, and even harder to find a good image, but we hope this quip works:

"My straight-arm recover was natural. I really couldn't swim it any other way. I think it developed when I was a kid, and I wanted to get down the pool the fastest."

Quote of the Day/Week- Michael Jordan

Today, we continue to quote American athletes who won team or individual medals, with a quip from the great basketball legend Michael Jordan.

Jordan won six NBA titles with the Chicago Bulls, a NCAA title with the North Carolina Tarheels in 1982, and two Olympic medals for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics (as an amateur) and the 1992 Barcelona Olympics (as a pro, yes that was the Dream Team).

Here is his quote:

"I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can't accept not trying."

Quote of the Day/Week-Bruce Jenner

This month in honor of the upcoming 2012 Summer Olympics in London, we are quoting American Olympic medal winners with an emphasis on gold medal winners.

On our other blog "The Daily Vampire," we quoted Alicia Sacramone, 24, a silver medalist and former Brown University gymnast over Mary Lou Retton, who won two gold medals in women's gymnastics the year that Sacramone was born...oh well!

Here, we are quipping Bruce Jenner, 62, who won a gold medal in the decathlon during the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Jenner may have become a forgotten seventies star, like Marie Osmond, but he happens to be the step-father of Kim Kardashian and her sisters: Kim and Khloe.

Here is his quote:

"First of all, I try to be a positive role model."

Both Jenner and Retton appeared on Wheaties cereal boxes after winning their respective gold medals.

SIDEBAR: We had prematurely said that the men's basketball team from Harvard was the Ivy League champion yesterday. But, now we can say that as Princeton downed Penn 62-52. If Penn had won the game, they would have played Harvard in a one-game playoff for the league title.

Whoops, We Forgot Belgium

Well, we are posting this simply to balance this blog with our other blog "The Daily Vampire," where we made an error sending an entry meant for this blog on that one.

But, we were thinking about taking a day off from blogging tomorrow to go wash dogs at an animal shelter in Lynchburg, Va. (that is a joke, but we understand there is a great animal shelter in that city).

Alas, an image we hoped to post of Borat at the rodeo in Salem, Va., which is my hometown, as featured in the film "Borat" fell through in our Kazakhstan entry due to technical problems or perhaps a block from that particular site. (By the way, the answer is B for the question in that entry).

And, earlier today, I was able to name 24 of the 25 cities that have hosted or will host the summer Olympics in mentalfloss.com quiz. We forgot about the 1920 Antwerp Olympics. I have even been to Antwerp, Belgium, (back in 1993) but I completely forgot that the city was an Olympic host. Our apologies to Tintin, and everyone else in Belgium.

Yvonne Tousek, a former Olympic gymnast and UCLA stand-out competed for Canada, who I get to chat with every now and then, competed in the 2000 Sydney Olympics and at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. She is curently performing with Cirque du Soleil.

I would say that I competed for Turkey (my late father's homeland) in greco-roman wrestling at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, when I would have been 22 years old, but I imagine the actual members of that team would not care for the joke.

Special Quote of the Week- Dominique Dawes

Today, in honor of Black History Month, we are going to start a month-long series of quotes from African-American athletes, past and present.

In may sports, an athlete can still compete at age 34, but that's not the case with gymnastics!

Nevertheless, Dominique Dawes, who won Olympic gold at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, is still very active in the public speaking circuit.

Her alma mater, the University of Maryland (Dawes did not compete for the school) faces their EAGL rivals from the University of North Carolina on Saturday. The meet between the Terps and the 'Heels will be at 7:00 p.m. in Chapel Hill.

Last week, Maryland finished third (in a four-school meet) in Ann Arbor, Mich., in which the host Wolverines won. But, the Terps had standout performances from Kesley Cofsky, who scored a 9.8 on bars. Gymnasts Kaitlin Joseph and Ally Krikorian scored a 9.7 each on the same apparatus.

As for UNC, the 'Heels beat William and Mary at home last week with solid scores from Morgan Evans, Elizabeth Durkac (who happens to be from Yorktown, Va., which is near the campus of William and Mary) and Emily Cornwell. Alas, our favorite Tarheel gymnast Christine Nguyen graduated last year.

Dawes has been very vocal about the need for young women to view themselves positively and her quote here certainly reflects that:

"I found through research that between 50 and 70 percent of young girls who describe themselves as overweight are actually normal weight."
