Tweets Conisdering All Things Washington DC (2 of 2): Saving the Ferret from a Govt Shutdown

If House Republicans get their way, a family from Nashville, Tenn., who travels to the nation's capital may not be able to go to the National Zoo. Conversely, they may not be able to go to Smoky Mountain National Park in their own state as well (it's always good to open with an editorial comment, it gets people's attention!).

Here are a look at today's DC tweets, from the right and the left alike. Just so no one is confused, just because I'm including tweets from a Republican member of the House, and a conservative magazine, doesn't mean, I agree with them:

1) Mo Ellithee (Democratic strategic commenting on the Virginia Gov. Race): "Ken Cuccinelli says Terry McAullife is the only candidate with a F-rating from the NRA. Tim Kaine did too. Won statewide 3 times. Next?"

2) Cong. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va): "Another Obamacare delay announced. Another reason the #SeanteMustAct."

3) Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC): "Tomorrow, I'm leading a hearing on my bipartisan bill to improve newborn screenings, which reduces preventable deaths among infants."

4) National Review: "Obama thinks O'care is unpopular b/c it's unfamiliar. Or maybe b/c it's more expensive and less quality healthcare?"

5) National Zoo (not a partisan tweet): "We're still working to help black-footed ferrets!"

6) George Washington U's women's volleyball team: "Very excited to welcome Alumnae this weekend for a our match vs. Towson" (modified version of the tweet they posted.)

Return of Friday Night Tweets: Bad Weather, Baseball and Politics

As of last report, the Durham Bulls (Durham, NC, pictured top) are losing badly in their home game against the Charlotte Knights. The score was 8-1 in the third inning. Here's hoping you are having a somewhat better night.

From the left and the right, here are the tweets:

1. National Review @NRO ( The National Review is a right wing publication, this is a center-left blog, the late Dale Carnegie would say that they should send us a thank u card): "Major Hasan's attack at #FtHood was terrorism, not workplace violence, and he'll be the first one to say so."

2. WXII 12 News @WXII (A tv station in Winston-Salem, NC): "Thunder and lightning right now in Winston-Salem. Keep an eye on the interactive radar.)

3. Durham Bulls @DurhamBulls: "Prior to tonight's game @DukeU Nobel Prize winner in chemistry Dr. Robert Lefkowitz threw out first pitch."

4.Erin Cunnigham @erincunnigham: Ugh, you have to show ID now when buying nail polish remover at CVS? Seriously America, stop cooking so much meth."

5. Portland Sea Dogs @PortlandSeaDogs_ a minor league baseball team in Portland, Maine: "First pitch set for 8:00 p.m. Henry Owens to make his Hadlock Field debut against Bowie."

6. The Onion @theonion_ for those of you in Azerbaijan, "The Onion" is a fake news publication: "Corpses of 'Lone Ranger' producres hung from Hollywood Blvd. street lights as warnings to others."

7. Tom Perriello @tomperriello_ pictured bottom, Perriello is a former Democratic congressional rep and now a CEO for a progressive lobbying firm: "Passing by Sylvania, Ohio, thinking of my grandfather Thomas Gillooly who spent his career there as teacher, coach, fireman, WWII vet, hero to me."

8. Mustafa Akyol @AkyolinEnglish_ Akyol is a Turkish journalist for "Hurriyet" newspaper: "If you are around Detriot, you are welcome this Sat to my debate on Islam, democracy and religious freedom."

Highlight from the Things To Do List: Go to the Local Art Museum

As I try to do every month, I put together a list of 100 Things To Do. It should be pointed out that while I respect religious people and Elvis Presley fans, I am posting this image to be ironic. Hopefully, our followers in the Czech Republic get the joke.

Here we go:

1. Visit the local art museum (yeah, that's another reason for the velvet Jesus and Elvis painting)

2. Looking into getting a Facebook page for the family business

3. Read "The Atlantic"

4. Read "Rolling Stone"

5. Read "The Week"

6. Cancel some magazine subscriptions

7. Read "The Nation" at the Salt Lake City* Library

8. Read "The National Review" at the local library to get into the right-wing mindset.

9. Do the laundry

10. Recycle

Friday Night Tweets: Terror Suspect and Major Rainstorms

We have tweets. We have tweets. Did we say: "We have tweets."

Let's explain the images real quickly: 1) the famed Paul Revere statue in Boston; 2) a Boston Red Sox umbrella; 3) a bear sloth cub which might well look like the one at the National Zoo in Washington, DC, that we will be mentioning.

Here we go; of course, the emphasis here is on today's developments in the now successful effort to apprehend Boston Marathon bomber suspect Dzohkar Tsarnaev:

1. The Fix @TheFix ("Washington Post" reporter Chris Cilliza): "People trying to make jokes on this standoff. Just quit it."

2. Anderson Cooper 360 @AC360: "@BrianToddCNN says there are floodlights on the boat, police are yelling at suspect in #watertown."

3. WBEZ @WBEZ (NPR station in Chicago): "Update: Shots fired in Mass. as police seek second bomb suspect."

4. National Review @NRO ("National Review" is a conservative American journal; we usually disagree with them): "BREAKING: Dead suspect spent 6 months abroad last year, flew from JFK to Russia. Unclear what he did during trip."

5. Muslim Matters @MuslimMatters: "American-Muslim communities pls touch base with your local police depts and request extra patrols and a physical security assessment."

6. HuffPost Celebrity @HuffPostCeleb: "Boston attack survivor Jeff Bauman gets a star-studded visit at the hospital."

7. Chapel Hill Magazine @ChapelHillMag: "Good luck to everyone running the @Tarheel10Miler tomorrow morning!"

8. geneweingarten @geneweingarten: "Are there any Jews involved in this things? If so, I am so embarrassed."

9. Katrina vanden Heuvel @KatrinaNation: "Dzhokar Tsranev in custody, alive."

10. National Zoo @NationalZoo: "At 4 mos old, our sloth bear cub is quick and enthusiastic when it  comes to training."

11. @The Kansan: "Suspect in custody! Great police work!!"

12. Mayor Tom Menino @mayortommenino (the mayor of Boston): "We got him."

13. Tom Tomorrow @tomtomorrow: "Everyone in Boston: take a deep breath. Have a drink. Have two."

14. Jesus Christ @jesus: "Over and out." (We wonder if he's hanging out with the fringe preacher the Rev. Johnny Roberston in Martinsville, Va.)

Monday Night Post-Debate Tweets: Let's Play Battleship

Before we get to the 8 tweets that we will post here, we should point out the reasons for these images: 1) Cenk Uygur, a Turkish-American liberal tv show who was born in March of 1970, essentially he is the same person as Tilly Gokbudak (that is me) the editor of this blog, except the later does not have a tv show on Current TV or anywhere else 2) Battleship: Yes, President Barack Obama made the night's pop cultural reference tonight, and surely the popular '70s board game will sell out by the end of the weekend and 3) Golda Meir, the legendary late first prime minister of Israel.

Let's get started:

1) @EWErickson (Erik Erickson, conservative editor of redstate.com): "The lefties in my timeline are exceedingly angry. A good sign for Romney."

2) @JenGranholm (Jenifer Granholm is a former Democratic governor of Michigan who now has a tv show on Current TV): "RT @CBS News: Breaking: CBS News Instant Poll on who won the #debate? Obama
53 %, Romney 23 %, tie 24 %"

3) @CenkUygur (Cenk Uygur): "Romney people saying he has grown as a candidate. Pretty much devastating admission he got killed."

4) @JonEasley (Jonathan Easley, a reporter for "The Hill"): "Chris Wallace: A marine tweeted us to say the Marines still use bayonets, so it may not be clear who really knows." (Obama made reference to bayonets during the debate).

5) @NRO ("National Review," a conservative magazine): "Chris Matthews slams Obama for #pandering on Israel #debates." (It's ironic to see a conservative journal quipping a center-left pundit. Yes, this tweet is why we are using an image of Golda Meir).

6) @TheOnion ("The Onion" is a faux news outlet): "Obama takes out Romney with a Mid-Debate drone attack."

7) @DavidCornDC (David Corn is a reporter for "Mother Jones," a liberal magazine): "Romney wins the #deabte_ if you're measuring by production of presperation."

8) @politico ("Politico" is an objective political journal): "Obama to Romney: This is not a game of Battleship."

Monday Night Pre-Debate Tweets- Alex Trebek the 'High Rollers' Days

We are apparently popular in Jordan! And, even more so than in Turkey, which is my late father's home country and a nation I have visited 15 times?! Perhaps, I now know how Al Gore felt when he was not able to win his home state of Tennessee in the 2000 election, which would have made him president instead of George W. Bush.

So, we are posting an image of King Abdullah II, who is the leader of Jordan as one of our three images. The two figures above him are "Jeopardy" host Alex Trebek when he was hosting "High Rollers" in the late 1970s and Big Bird, who has become very popular since Mitt Romney alluded to the fact that might try to fire this famous fowl  by cutting funds for public television during the first debate in Denver, Colo.

Tonight, in Boca Raton, Fla., the candidates will have won one last night debate on foreign policy, if this doesn't settle they may to fight in a boxing in Las Vegas, which would be appropriate since Nevada is also a swing state.

Here are our tweets:

1) @michaelianblack (Michael Ian Black, a comic actor): "They should get Alex Trebek to host the foregin policy debate because he always sounds so authentic when he says foreign stuff."

2) @interviewnews (Interview Magazine): "Even Clark Kent knows there's no future in print journalism."

3) @denverpolitics (Denver Politics News): "Ad blaming Romney for Colorado wind-industry job losses in gray area."

4) @SunDC (The Sun in DC): "Sunset 6:20 p.m., Sunset Tommorow 6:18 p.m."

5) @thehilltweets ("The Hill" is a daily journal which covers Congress): "Obama, Romney promote voting apps on Facebook."

6) @marketplaceatm ("Marketplace" is a daily radio show airing on most NPR stations): "For those of you talking politics at work: yes, it can get you fired." (Wow!)

7) @ForecasterEnten  (Harry Enten covers American politics for "The Guardian UK"): "Put another way even if Obama still has ads on the air in North Carolina any neutral observer knows he may have a high floor, but a low ceiling" (This is reference to the Tarheel State, our state of residency, which speculators now see going to Romney, but then again no one thought Duke would beat UNC in football over the weekend).

8) @NRO ("National Review," a conservative magazine, yes, we don't quote their tweets very often): "Exchange of the day: Soledad flips on Rudy "I'm a journalist!" Isn't that proof that you're a bad one?" (Soledad O'Brien is a reporter for CNN. Ironically, it seems that the NRO has one thing in common with us: Neither of us will be watching the debate on CNN. Presumably, they will watch it on Fox News, whereas we will watch it on PBS!).

Happy Holidays from Bo the White House Dog

Everyone who was watching CNN at any point yesterday is aware that President Barack Obama is in Hawaii. Which makes one wonder who is looking after Bo? Or, did the Obamas take him with them to the islands?

Nevertheless, we thought it would be good to mention that plenty of cats and dogs are up for adoption at your local animal shelter. In my hometown of Salem, Va. (www.salempets.org), the Salem City Animal Shelter can be reached at 540-375-3038. In Reidsville, NC, the city where I live, which has a very high kill rate (among the highest in the country!), the shelter can be reached at (336)-342-4022.

We have a companion entry to this piece on our sister blog "The Daily Vampire."

On a side note, some conservative friends of the family are visiting us from Johnson City, Tenn. I jokingly told my mom that we should get them a subscription to "Utne" ( progressive magazine, which currently has a story on the 'environmental Star Wars'), but no one in my immediate family has a sense of humor. The same could not be said for my cousin Shannon Sturgis of St. Louis, Mo., who prevents me from being the most irreverent person in the family. I should get her a subscription of "National Review"* for that!

*-"National Review" is not a progressive magazine at all. My sister Shannon is actually to the left of me, and I am not a Republican!

Coming Sunday.......Blogathon

Since I am running behind with blog posts both here and on our sister blog "The Daily Vampire," we've decided to have a 14 entry blogathon on Sunday! This is going to take planning, fortitude and organization- three skils I don't possess.

We're looking for sponsors, but we may go with the left-leaning publication "The Nation" and the right-leaning "National Review" since subscriptions to both magazines are reportedly being cancelled by my community college of employment!

Since I am now a subscriper to the center-left publication "New Republic," I should getting my fill of politics at home, if only the first issue would arrive!
