Comic Strips Dialogue: We Quote Pickles

Three years ago, we used to take dialogue from comic strips and put them in order to make a full conversation. We are using an image of the play "Defending the Caveman" for the comic strip "B.C." Similarly, we are using the Northside High School (Roanoke, Va.) logo for "Hagar the Horrible," who is also a Viking. And, lastly, we using sinks from a Turkish bathroom for the line we are using from the comic strip "Take It from the Tinkersons."

Here we go (Don't Try This at Home or On Your Blog...it's time-consuming):

1. "Mmmm! Something sure smells good!" (Pickles, Aug. 2nd)

2. "Let me give you a cooking lesson." (Baldo, Aug. 2nd)

3. "Go away. I already beat you once!" (B.C., July 19th)

4. "Try to relax! Focus on your peaceful surroundings! Don't think about work!" (Hagar the Horrible, Aug. 2nd)

5. "Hey, I know real people!" (Garfield, July 19th)

6. "You're a Bob Dylan fan, right Cosmo?" (Shoe, July 19th)

7. "Wow! Talk about false advertising." (Adam at Home, May 3rd)

8. "Diner was marvelous, mom." (Hi and Lois, May 3rd)

9. "I........Have to Go to the Bathroom" (Take it from the Tinkersons, May 3rd)

Top Ten Comics from The Roanoke Times: Hi and Lois Doesn't Make the Cut

We were thinking about writing a letter-to-the-editor to "The Roanoke Times," asking them to replace "Hi and Lois" with the cutting edge, hip Danish import "WuMO," but ultimately, they would probably be more likely to publish a rant from someone on the political fringes, although Cong. David Brat (R-Va) has proven extremists can become elected members of Congress as he maintains that the state of Texas is on the verge of being invaded by ISIS. Yeah, we think he's watched both versions of "Red Dawn" once too many as well!

Here are our top ten comic strips from "The Roanoke Times," in which "Pearls Before Swine" depicts the tragedy of what can happen to an adventurer going to New Zealand (a lake from that country is pict. top), "Speed Bump" shows a date in which the girl wants to be strictly platonic (yes, that the reason for the center image) and "Get Fuzzy" features a row over tuna fish?!

Speaking of the middle image, Molly Ringwald was in nearby Greensboro, NC, recently for a fundraiser for the homeless; we're sorry we missed her!  We also wondered if "Speed Bump" was perhaps a satire of the weekly "Washington Post Magazine" segment "Date Lab," in which a spat over Radiohead makes one feel the other person is not quite right for them!

Here we go:

1) Pearls Before Swine

2) Speed Bump

3) Get Fuzzy

4) Doonesbury

5) Zits

6) Dilbert

7) Agnes

8) Jump Start

9) Garfield

10) Baby Blues

Top Ten Comics from Sunday Roanoke Times: Dogs on Espressos or Turkish Coffees

Stephan Pastis, the award-winning comic strip artist who writes and draws "Pearls Before Swine" is visiting Fountain Books in Richmond, Va., on Thursday. 'Pearls' takes second place this week behind "Speed Bump," which literally illustrates what dogs would be like if they drank too much caffeine. We imagine this comic strip was liked by (mr) Shannon Wheeler, who created the independent comic book anti-hero Too Much Coffee Man, more than 20 years ago.

Dogs were also featured in "Funky Winkerbean," as therapy dogs (pictured bottom) take center stage.

As for 'Pearls,' the strip features Zebra and Crocodile talking about the ethics of using Norwegian lemmings (pictured center) in a croquet game, which arguably makes the comic strip the most surreal of mainstream comic strips with the exception of perhaps "WUMO," which is not carried by "The Roanoke Times."

One surprise this week thanks to a surprisingly funny "Hi and Lois," the strip makes our top ten as we fully understand how Millenials have taken to things we grew up with, such as typewriters and rotary phones.

Here is our top ten:

1) Speed Bump

2) Pearls Before Swine

3) Agnes

4) Garfield

5) Get Fuzzy

6) Doonesbury

7) Funky Winkerbean

8) Dilbert

9) Zits

10) Hi and Lois

I AM AS SICK AS A FRENCH POODLE!

Well, if I was ever going to listen to a fringe, far-right AM radio talk show host tonight would be the night as I have been sick since I came down with a sinus infection some time either late Thursday night or early Friday morning. I actually heard one of these Glenn Beck wannabes say that the size of Swedish meatballs in restaurants has shrunk since Obama became president, which is also when these whackos said we became a socialist country. As a friend of mine pointed out though, Sweden is actually a socialist country! And, they have some great hockey players too.

At any rate, there will not be an image with this particular entry as a snafu occured in the hot-linking process. But, we will try to post the picture we were going to use on Tuesday.

I had a strange dream while I was sleeping this morning that the local paper in my hometown of Roanoke, Va., "The Roanoke Times" had added Bill Griffith's cult comic strip "Zippy the Pinhead," which "The Washington Post"- a newspaper with ten times the circulation- recently dropped (much to my disappointment, but they still have a great comics page). I have not checked today's edition of "The Roanoke Times," but I sense that dream is not about to come true anytime soon though they do publish "Hi and Lois."

"The News-Record" in nearby Greensboro, NC, publishes the 'equally hip' comic strip "The Wizard of Id," which was apparently popular in 1972 when I was a two-year-old tyke.

None of this is to say that I don't like some dated comic strips. I find "Marmaduke" to be amusing even though I hate most large dogs.

I would write more but there is some Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup on the stove. Yeah, I don't expect that it will do anything for me either!

See you on Monday..........
