Potluck Quote of the Day (4 of 10): Jimmy Carter

Today's Quote of the Day is from former President Jimmy Carter, who is now 91 years old; last night, Carter's time in the White House was the basis for a PBS documentary on "The American Experience."

We are indeed quoting Carter because it's an election year. In 1976, the year Carter ran for president against Republican Gerald Ford, the Marvel Comics character Howard the Duck also ran for office. Coincidentally, Mr. Duck was from Cleveland, Ohio, where this year's Republican convention took place. We gather no one there was dressed like Harley Quinn (played by Margot Robbie in the new film "Suicide Squad", and the ever-gorgeous actress Anne Hathaway was not there either!

Today, we are continuing our series of presidential quotes with a quip from Jimmy Carter, the peanut farmer from Georgia who upset other Democratic candidates in the 1976 primaries and then defeated incumbent President Gerald Ford, whom Carter later became good friends with, to become president of the United States.

Quote of the Day- George Brett

Today, I am quoting the two legendary third baseman who were the center-point of the 1980 World Series between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Kansas City Royals.

Alas, Mike Schmidt's Phils beat George Brett's Royals, but the American League slugger got his own World Series ring in 1985 when the Royals beat the St. Louis Cardinals.

Brett, now 57, is originally from West Virginia, and he played his entire 20-year career (1973-93) with the Royals. Bret was also a 13-time All-Star and he was named American League MVP in 1980.

SIDEBAR_ I know magazines must be desperate for subsribers these days due to the increasingly annoying digitalization of everything. But, I was still VERY surprised to get a subsription request from the conservative magazine "The Weekly Standard." I am a liberal Democrat (but I live in a place that's more like Provo than Provincetown) and I subscribe to the center-left journal "The New Republic."

But, I did exchange a few pleasant emails with William Kristol, and as much as I disagree with him, especially about Sarah Palin, I can not say anything negative about him personally.

In the current issue, "Weekly Standard" contributor Jonathan V. Last has an article about how Superman will supposedly lose his American citizenship. I didn't get a chance to read the article, so it would be an assumption on my part that the article blames President Barack Obama. But, the right will probably blame him for yesterday's tornadoes in Alabama. As it turns out, Last, which would be a very bad last name for a politician, is an avid comic book fan. He apparently eulogized Captain America. This leads to wonder what he thinks about my personal favorite Marvel Comics character Howard the Duck. But, he probably doesn't have time to read this blog!

My Top Ten Likely Republicans Likely to Run List

This entry will seem ironic to many of you who are familiar with my politics. I jokingly say that would likely vote for a Democrat over a Republican even if Howard the Duck* was the candidate though there are a select few GOP members who I might well pull the lever for including my good friend Cong. Frank Wolf (R-Va.) and Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine).

But, as a political junkie, I have to state who I think will likely run against President Barack Obama in 2012 since the process will get underway in a mere ten months, which illustrates how insane the American electoral process has become.

Most of these entries are either present or former governors of current senators, with the exceptions of Cong. Eric Cantor (R-Va) and former house speaker Newt Gingrich.

Here are my predictions (yes, #10 is a bit of a joke):

Nostalgia Monday- Comic Book Character Who Ran 4 Prez

Today, with my sister blog "The Daily Vampire," I am focusing on 1976. It was the first and last year I wanted a Republican to win the White House. I was six years old at the time, and for some reason I was very found of President Gerald Ford, who was admittedly a nicer guy than most modern day Republicans.

It was also the year a certain Marvel Comics character ran for president.

If you have been with this blog when we were with AOL, you probably already know the answer. But, for a free trip to War, W.Va, we are offering it again (it should be noted there are no hotels in War that we are aware of!).
