Greetings to our blog readers in Albania, Egypt, and Canada.....
Over our ten years of blogging, we have not been too consumed with which entries get mega-hits and which ones are ignored like the opening act at a Rolling Stones concert, but Bruce Jenner (now known as Caitlyn Jenner or Jessica Lange) and Bristol Palin both got us attention in ways we never imagined!
A quote from Jenner (top) and Palin (bottom), the daughter of Sarah Palin, a governor of Alaska who ran with John McCain as the veep nominee for the Republican Party made for entries which both rank in our top image. The Bristol Palin quote is the number one entry, while the Bruce Jenner quote was our third most popular entry, helped in all probability by his stunning gender-change.
Other popular entries include one about how we ate a whole entire anchovy pizza in Washington, DC, during a 2010 trip (anchovies are pict. center), a silly image to fill space for an angora cat, and a quote from Che Guevara, which probably helped us become popular in Cuba and El Salvador.
Here are the six most popular entries.........with entries to the ones which have photos....
1. Things We Learned on Twitter (the Bristol Palin entry). April 7, 2010. 14,416 hits.

Today is This Blog's 8th Anniversary
It was on this day that we started blogging with this blog eight years ago. Very few of us from the 'Keystone Kops' days of the blogosphere have kept up with our blogs for this long. One person who comes to mind is my good friend Chris Knight of Reidsville, NC.
I should point that the Chris Knight I know was not on "The Brady Bunch" (it aired before he was born, and when I was an infant), nor is he the singer who is playing Kirk Avenue Music Hall in Roanoke, Va., on Sept. 29th.
http://kirkavenuemusic.com/
Nor is he related to the great cartoonist Keith Knight of "K-Chronicles" and the "Knight Life" comic strip, which runs in the Sunday "Washington Post." Keef, as he likes to call himself, is actually an African-American. The Chris Knight I know, and the other two Chris Knights are all white guys.
http://www.kchronicles.com/
But, the Chris Knight I know is the guy aired a Star Wars-themed tv ad when he unsuccessfully ran for an open seat for the Rockingham County School Board in 2006. (Interestingly, both Chris Knight the blogger and Keith Knight are huge Star Wars fans).
http://theknightshift.blogspot.com/
http://www.theforce.net
The most popular blog entry on this particular blog is one that discusses a tweet from Bristol Palin (Sarah Palin's daughter.) It has close to 15,000 hits. We are still amazed by that!
Here's to eight more years.....
Although I'd like to take a day off and go to the Museum of Bad Art in Massachussetts:

Friday Night Tweets, Contd_. Nixon 2013?
Since it is snowing cats and dogs here in Burlington, NC, (not really where we are, but it is snowing in North Carolina too), we thought we'd post some more Friday night tweets, including one which alludes to a certain deceased Republican president, and no we don't mean Herbert Hoover:
1) WSOC TV @WSOC_TV: Highway patrol responds to more than 300 accidents in the Charlotte area today.
2) Spears YMCA Sports @SpearsYSports: For Sat., Jan 26th, all basketball games at Kernodine Middle School in Greensboro are cancelled.
3) Mother Jones @MotherJones: @boyscouts threaten to boot troop unless they discriminate
4) Sun Devil Gymnastics @ASUGymnastics: "Sun devil spirit is in the arena as the crowd begins an 'A-S-U' chant."
5) The Fix @TheFix: "Seriously....imagine a giant-sized Richard Nixon racing around the Nats Park. That would freaking rule.
6) Top Conservative Cat @TeaPartyCat: Now that Sarah Palin is off Fox News, she can finally devote herself full time to curing cancer.
7)Dane Cook @DaneCook: RT if you think a committed relationship is more of a weekday activity.

Quote of the Day/Week-Tina Fey
One has to ask Malcolm Gladwell, the "New Yorker" writer who has written about how the mind works, if Tina Fey's birthday, which is on May 18, had anything to do with her many major successes, including being a writer/performer for "Saturday Night Live," writing the screenplay and acting in "Mean Girls" (2008), creating and starring in the hit sitcom "30 Rock," somehow finding time to give birth to two children and being Republican candidate John McCain's running mate in the 2008 presidential election.
We are quoting Fey because she was born in the same year as us, which is 1970. Whoops! We somehow forgot that Fey has also written the best-selling memoir "Bossypants." And, she wasn't actually McCain's running mate, but she did play Sarah Palin on tv.
Her quote seems like a fairly accurate as one would imagine that Fey has exceptional time management skills, and perhaps she drinks as many cappuccinos as cartoonist Shanon Wheeler's creation Too Much Coffee Man.
Here it is:
"I am constantly amazed by Tina Fey. And I am Tina Fey."
We often wonder here if celebrities ever visit our blog to check out our quotes, but we imagine that at this very moment Fey is in her dressing room talking to her "30 rock" co-star Alec Baldwin while simultaneously memorizing lines that she probably wrote herself!
Incidentally, Matt Damon, whom we quoted last week, had made frequent guest appearances as an airplane pilot on "30 Rock."

Bonus Road Trip- Theatre to Theatre
Since Washington, DC, like many places on the east coast, ranging from Myrtle Beach, SC, to Chapel Hill, NC, to Norfolk, Va, to.......well, you get the idea, is expecting massive chaos and flooding from the remnants of Hurricane Irene, it may be good to think about fleeing town.
Mike Madden of (Washington) "City Paper" blogged earlier tonight that an eastward shift in Hurricane Irene's path may help the nation's capital miss some 'real ugliness.'
So, we thought we'd compare the distances between two very historic theatres, the Ford's Theatre in Washington, DC, and the Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Va., relatively close to the Tenneesee border- just in case anyone still really wants to leave the DC-metro area, and perhaps that would include members of Congress.
The drive which passes through towns like Front Royal, Mount Jackson, Harrisonburg, Lexington, Roanoke and Radford will take awhile even though no state line will be crossed after one leaves Washington, DC, and enters the Virginia suburb of Arlington.
The Barter Theatre, which started in 1933, has seen actors like the late Gregory Peck grace its stages. Currently, the Barter is producing several plays, including "Elvis Has Left the Building," which deals with Col. Tom Parker's frantic mission to find Elvis Presley in time for a major concert in 1970.
Meanwhile, the Ford's Theatre, which is best known for being the place where President Abraham Lincoln was assasinated by John Wilkes Booth, prompting the following quip from comedian/author Sarah Vowell: "No one really goes to the Ford's Theatre to actually see a play," is going to be performing an interesting musical called "Parade" from Sept. 23- Oct. 30.
Though the play is a musical, the subject of "Parade" is a very serious one as it depicts the trial and eventual hanging of Leo Frank, a Jewish man from Atlanta in the early 20th century, who was accused of raping and murdering a 13-year-old girl named Mary Phagan. It is now generally believed that Frank was wrongfully convicted and executed for the crime.
So, our question is just how far apart these two zip codes are.
Is the answer:
A) 4 hours, 15 minutes
B) 4 hours, 45 minutes
C) 5 hours, 15 minutes
D) 5 hours, 45 minutes
Alas, Hurricane Irene is devastating the communities of the Outer Banks in North Carolina, my state of residency, and my thoughts are with everyone in that area.
SIDEBAR: Even before we remembered that liberal turned neocon playwright David Mamet ("Oleanna/"American Buffalo") penned a roman a clef about Leo Frank entitled "The Old Religion" (1997), we were going to mention him because of his new memoir "The Secret Knowledge."
In this new book, Mamet apparently discusses the reasons which resulted in his radical political shift, which include disillusionment with labor unions and his partisan support for Israel.
Mamet's novel about Frank is told from the condemned man's point of view, and it is a work which illustrates the role of race, ethnicity and religion in America.
One has to wonder if there are any similarities between the new Mamet and the old Mamet, which was brought forth brilliantly by "The Village Voice" blogger Rosie Gray regarding a "Financial Times" piece in which Mamet talked about his Noam Chomsky to Ayn Rand conversion and the art of playwrighting.
Gray said that it was amusing to read that Mamet is an admirer of Sarah Palin, a person which one would think might make a convert revert to his old political orthodoxy. She added that everyone needed to remember that Mamet was no longer 'a brain-dead liberal' (his own words).
But, the blogger pointed out that during his interview with FT, Mamet had a meal which consisted of a 'very liberal' salad with balgamic vinaigernee. The playwright/essayist/filmmaker also resides in Vermont part-time; it is considered to be the most liberal state in the union?!

Happy Belated 50th Birthday President Barack Obama
Yes, this blog entry has political overtones. But, we are wondering, if any of the Republican presidential candidates (wow! No, I can't name them all in three and a half minutes) did send him one.
Here are our guesses; we will put an * besides the ones who have not announced if he or she is running or not:
Newt Gingrich: Hmmm. This is tough....I'll go with no.
Tim Pawlenty: Yes
Mitt Romney: Yes
Michele Bachmann: No
Jon Huntsman: Yes
Ron Paul: No
Herman Cain: No
* Rick Perry- No
Rick Santorum- No
*Sarah Palin-No

Revised Top 10 New Year's Resolutions
There were actually 50 New Year's Eve resolutions that I made; many of them will never, ever be made public--- not even if I am water-boarded (sorry, Dick Cheney!).
But, we came up with ten that are somewhat plausible or reasonable. Hopefully, we will actually get or three of these things accomplished.
And, of course, I would never resort to Pinocchio tactics to go out with an attractive woman....why is my nose growing?
Taking a cruise down the Nile River was actually number 39, but that has been removed for painfully obvious reasons, though hopefully there will be enough political stability in Egypt to go see King Tut's tomb one day.
Here is the list:
1. Go out with a cute girl you've just met for coffee (well, it will have to be someone else besides Natalie Portman!)
2. Lose about 15-20 pounds...yeah, I say this every year
3. Go to Asheville already (I live in NC, but it's still a bit of a drive from Roanoke Rapids*).
4. Eat more Turkish food, less Mexican food (sorry amigos, nothing personal, but I could go for a good steak burrito right now...)
5. Try to watch fewer bad movies
6. Volunteer for the local animal shleter or a non-profit group with no political agenda
7. Volunteer for the Democratic Party so Palinzilla does not become prez!
8. Write a memoir, a novel or a play already (this is always on the resolutions list!)
9. Figure out what the guy with the attractive girlfriend did to get her, even if it involves lying!
10. More mocha; less cappucino!
*- I don't actually live in Roanoke Rapids, NC, but I had to come up with a place to thwart potential cyberstalkers.

Our Best Person for 2010 Is.....
.............Lisa Murkowski, the Republican senator from Alaska. Yes, we are a liberal-leaning blog, and we are choosing Sen. Murkowski!
The reason for this is that while she may officially beaten Tea Party favorite Joe Miller and the mostly not-talked-about Democratic candidate Scott McAdams on the ballot, the person she really defeated was mama grizzly Sarah Palin, or Palinzilla as we like to call her.
At age 53, Sen. Murkowski is rather attractive for an elected official. Someone from Tashkent, Uzbekistan, might well think she was in the cast of "Charlie's Angels" in her younger days. Politically, her father Frank Murkowski put her in the U.S. Senate after he vacated his U.S. senate seat to become the governor of Alaska (he was later toppled by Palinzilla).
This did not go over well with many folks in Alaska, and it actually gave her 2004 Democratic opponent Terry Knowles, who was also once the governor of Alaska, a fighting chance in the very red state.
But, in spite of losing the GOP nomination to Miller, a far right nut who is gunsGodncounty radical who actually cited the former East Germany as a country which could control their borders (they did this by shooting people trying to leave the country) by a 51-49 margin, Murkowski put up a good fight with a write-in campaign.
And, in spite of lawsuits and court hearings and even disputes about ballots in which Murkowski's last name were not spelled correctly, she emerged as the victor in the close election. Thus, Murkowski was able to give the Tea Party a left jab that few Democrats were able to deliver, and it was indeed a knock-out punch.
Murkowski is considered one of the most moderate Republicans in the Senate. She is pro-choice, favors stem cell research and opposed Don't Ask, Don't Tell. While she has opposed President Barack Obama on federal health care legislation, she should be a hero to anyone who thinks this country needs more people like David Brooks and fewer right-wing idiots like Glenn Beck.
Thus, in a Republican year, it only seems fair to break form and choose Murkowski as our person of the year. Take that, mama grizzly!

Status Update_ Underdog Versus Palinzilla

I had a surreal last night/this morning, in which I was the late '60s cartoon hero Underdog and I was saving New York City from Palinzilla, a 90-foot fire breathing robot that looked exactly like Sarah Palin.
While I fully sympathize with "Washington Post" columnist Dana Milbank, who has said there should be a moratorium on mentioning Palinzilla's name, I could not resist sharing this story.
In the dream, I gave her one simple whack across the nose and her circuits exploded causing her to malfunction and retreat back to the Hudson Bay. It was ironically sort of like a version of 'David and Goliath.'
Of course, some feminists may argue that my Underdog engaged in domestic violence, but my response would be: "Hey, someone had to save the universe from Palinzilla." Obviously, I do not condone domestic violence in any form and as it is since Palinzilla was a robot, I could argue Underdog was not hitting a woman because androids don't have genders!
SIDEBAR: Everyone in the world seems to be talking about the riots in Egypt today. On the left, "The Nation" has articles titled like "Fire in the Streets of Cairo: Will the Army Hold?" and "Egypt's K-Street Connections."
While on the right, John McCormack has an analysis of President Barack Obama's statement on Egypt in "The Weekly Standard." While I did not have time to actually read the article, I would presume given the magazine's politics, which are actually more restrained than some of their counterparts, that it was critical of Obama.
And, for those of us on the center-left, there is always the ever-reliable "The New Republic" in which Heather Hurlburt has an article about the five things every American should know about the riots which threaten Hosni Mubarak's 30-year reign as the president of Egypt. I was a bit humored and horrified to see that the article actually featured a photograph from a riot in Turkey, which is my late father's country!

High School of the Week- Woodrow Wilson High School (Washington DC)
We have focused on Ragsdale High School in Jamestown, NC (near Greensboro), Bluefield High School in Bluefield, WVa, and Clarke County High School in Athens, Ga., but we have not yet focused on any high schools in the nation's capital.
So, today we conclude our series (at least until sometime next year, perhaps) with a blog entry dedicated to students at Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington, DC, so high school kids in Capital City don't feel like we are snubbing them.
WWHS (there is a school of the same name in Beckley, West WVa) is located in Tenlytown, and among the school's famous alumni are Warren Buffet and former DC mayor Adrian Fenty. Buffet graduated in 1947, and was voted as being very likely to become a stock broker.
The school mascot is the Wilson Tiger (obviously, this is NOT the school helmet) and the school colors are green and white.
Pete Cahall is the principal of the school, which has students from 85 different countries. The Tigers also have their own squash and crew teams!
SIDEBAR: In a story that we could call 'Midnight Express in Reverse,' the NPR talk show "The Story," hosted by Dick Gordon, reported back on Nov. 15 that a Canadian of Iraqi descent Yassin Alsalman, aka The Narcisyst, a filmmaker/rap singer who once made a video of what it would be like to racially profiled by airport security had that very same experience while at the Toronto Airport. And, after an unholy five hours of integration with no basis, Alsalman was denied entry into The United States.
He was attempting to travel to Washington, DC, for a film screening at a film festival there. A few shows later, one listener who is hopefully a Tea Bagger said Alsalman got exactly what he deserved which is what Turkish people once said about Billy Hayes (the man whose story was told in "Midnight Express"). So much for a global community.
SIDEBAR TWO: Drew Carey, the comedian who hosts "The Price is Right," and Scott Simon of NPR were both making fun of President Barack Obama's pickup basketball game injury today which resulted in 12 stiches on his lip through Twitter. Carey tweeted that 'he didn't know that Obama was playing basketball with Dick Cheney,' while Simon said the man the president was playing with could end up becoming ambassador to North Korea.
SIDEBAR THREE: In the "Did She Really Say That?" Dept., Sarah Palin told far right-wing nutcase Glenn Beck this week that: "We need to stick with our North Korean allies."

Top Ten Places to Move to if Sarah Becomes Prez
My good friend Debbie Collins, a public librarian in Bethesda, Md., (pse- see other blog) has told me that if Sarah Palin becomes the next president, she will leave the country for The Land of Blue Frogs (Costa Rica).
I made a similar list in October on our other blog "The Daily Vampire," in which I named Iceland as my top choice, but Ms. Collins is inclined to go with warmer weather.
Interestingly enough, Mrs. Collins picked two Muslim countries in Morocco (she told me she's always wanted to go to Tangiers, the setting of William Burroughs's cult novel "Naked Lunch") and the United Arab Emirates (she said: "I hear there's lots of money in Dubai). She is not Muslim herself.
Two cold countries, Canada and Denmark, made her list, but she professed I was nuts for putting France on my top ten 'Escape from Sarah' list (it was number six on my list).
Canada was also one of three countries to make both of our lists, along with Argentina and Greece.
Here is her list, if you have one of your "Escape from Sarah" lists, email me at tango74@aol.com
1. Costa Rica
2. Greece
3. Brazil
4. South Africa
5. New Zealand
6. Argentina
7. Canada
8. Denmark
9. Morocco
10. United Arab Emirates

Things We Learned on Twitter Today- Former Guns N Roses Member Has a Beef
For those who grew up with Guns N Roses in the late 1980s, the band's anthem "Welcome to the Jungle" has a special place in our hearts.
But, Duff McKagan, a former member of the band, wrote in "Seattle Weekly" that he is not happy the song is now being played to rev up fans at Yankee Stadium.
Duff made his comments in a guest column for the journal, and he said while he is a huge sports fan, the song simply wasn't intended to be the equivalent of Queen's song "We Will Rock You."
SIDEBAR: Hooray for Duke University's hapless football team which beat Navy 34-31 for their first win of the year in Annapolis, Md., last weekend. This week, the BlueDevils host The University at noon on their home turf in Durham, NC.
My alma mater Glenvar High School in Salem, Va., goes on the road to the mountain hamlet of Floyd, Va., to face the Floyd County High School Buffalos. We wish the Highlanders luck, though personally I prefer the other school's mascot to our's!
SIDEBAR TWO: Our fellow liberal friend The Kansan, who is really from Kansas and a Kansas Jayhawks fan, tweeted today that: "One often hears the question: Do you have to politicize everything? The answer is of course yes!
On that note, we invite our readers to insert their favorite Sarah Palin joke in our comment section. I am deliberating as to which country I would move to if she becomes president in 2012. My top three choices are Norway, Costa Rica and Tunisia (we had to choose one Muslim to irk the Christian conservatives, though admitedly it would be quite hot in North Africa!).

50 Beers From Around the World- Lasko Pivo (Slovenia)
Ahh, if only we could get away from it all and go to the Kluze fortress in northwest Slovenia.
But in the mean time, we can blog about Lasko Pivo, the Slovenian brew that was founded by gingerbread baker Franz Geyer in 1825.
Lasko Pivo participates in the famed Festival of Beer and Flowers in the city of Lasko, Slovenia.
Other interest destinations in the Slovenia, a former Yugoslav Republic which borders Austria and Croatia, is the Emerald Route which takes tourists by waterfalls and forests......must be nice!
SIDEBAR: It is so nice to wrap up an evening to a very hectic day with a refreshing Blue Moon with the company of my favorite Tea Party favorite Christine O'Donnell of Delaware (yeah, I guess you know by now that politically, of course, I can't stand her!) who is vying for Vice President Joe Biden's old U.S. Senate seat. Of course, this is one 'beer summit' that Biden would probably want to miss! The Republican witchy woman has joined me for beer and laughs at The Washington Street Ale House in Wilmington, Del.*, where she is making fun of President Barack Obama and I am taking shots at America's favorite unemployed mama grizzly Sarah Palin. Who says: "Why can't we all get along?!"
*-An actual place which does indeed serve teh trendy brew Blue Moon.

High School of the Week- Wasilla High School (Alaska)
Yes, we once again get to make fun of Sarah Palin as we profile Wasilla High School in Wasilla, Alaska, as our "High School of the Week." This is the same school that her daughter Bristol Palin who seems to disdain the spotlight as much as Paris Hilton enjoys it went to school.
Dwight Probasco is the principal of Wasilla High, which promotes abstitence awareness, according to Wikipedia.
The nickname for Wasilla HS is The Warriors, which is also the school mascot.
Wasilla HS has worked to raise awareness of groundwater issues in Alaska. Teens Against Tobacco Use and The Thespian Society are among the school's clubs.
And, yes, they do in fact actually have a hockey team!

Top 10 Major League Teams- Cubs are My Favorite Team (even though they stink!)
Yes, the images don't always reflect the headlines, but hey no one is actually paying us to post these things as it is!
But, the futile Chicago Cubs are my favorite team and the image here, a bobblehead doll for the Baltimore Orioles, is of a team that is going through their own woes this season.
To be honest, I haven't watched a major league game on tv all year! And, I have no idea what is going on except that we did learn that the Chicago Cubs were 54-74 as of today. And, assuredly the Reds, who beat 7-1 last night, will probably clobber them again tonight.
I did find an amusing photo of the Phillie Phanatic with former president George W. Bush, who I like as much as Papa Smurf cared for Gargamel, but it wasn't political differences as much as space concerns which prevented from using the image.
As it is the image would not have made sense since the Phillies are not on my Top 10 Favorite Teams List:
1. Chicago Cubs
2. Boston Red Sox
3. Washington Nationals
4. Baltimore Orioles
5. Chicago White Sox (I rooted for them even before Obama became prez!)
6. Colorado Rockies
7. Toronto Blue Jays (they may move up to number one if Sarah Palin gets to The Oval Office!)
8. New York Mets (my friend Woody's favorite team; they have reportedly caused him much agony!)
9. Cleveland Indians
10. Florida Marlins

Quote of the Day- David Beckham
Today, we continue to quote people who are associated with the 32 countries in The World Cup, but this time we are actually quipping someone who is actually playing in the tournament!
David Beckham and his English team will face Algeria at 2:30 p.m. (US, eastern time) in a crucial game which will follow the game between my country The United States (well, as a Turkish-American, I also support Turkey though they are not in the World Cup) and the former Yugoslav republic of Slovenia, a country that Sarah Palin probably thinks borders Ghana?!
Beckham is (well doesn't everyone outside Tajikistan know this) married to a former Spice Girl, and his quote reflects that:
"I always used to go for blondes and quiet girls, but Victoria is just the opposite-----dark and loud."
It should be pointed out that even though Tajikistan is not in The World Cup they must have a decent soccer team as they beat Bangladesh 6-1 in a qualifier. But, yeah we don't think they would have beaten Argentina either!

Tweet of the Moment_ For Our Friends in Georgia
This tweet was posted last night by 'Zippy the Pinhead' (or perhaps his creator, cartoonist Bill Griffith):
"I'm gliding over a NUCLEAR WASTEDUMP near Atlanta, Georgia!"
I also saw on Twitter last night that the Denver Food Guy had posted a recipe for Greek octopus dishes, which reminds me that given the current economic crisis this may (or may not) be a good time to go to Samos---that is a Greek island 35 miles off the coast of Kushadasi, Turkey.
And, we saw that some fringe right-wing lunatic in Marshall, Tex., posted a billboard asking if those of us who voted for President Barack Obama were 'embarrased yet?'
I was amused by this for several reasons: 1) Obama is a good president--certainly 10 times better than George W. Bush 2) Sarah Palin has become even more of a diva nightmare since the presidential campaign, and let's face it if John McCain had won the election she would be the one actually running the country?! and 3) Texas was not even a swing state, so essentially any votes cast for Obama in the Lonestar State really didn't matter much.
Interestingly enough, The Republican Party has decided to follow me?! on Twitter.

Things We Learned on Twitter This Afternoon....

Everyone who has ever spent any significant amount of time on this blog knows I like Sarah Palin as much as The Smurfs liked Gargamel.
But, I couldn't resist this as I learned on Twitter today that Bristol Palin was on "Good Morning America" to promote her new 30-second Public Service Announcement to prevent teen pregnancy.
Hmmmmm........one has to think Ellen Page, the star of "Juno," who has to my knowledge never gotten pregnant as a teeanger in real life, might have been a better choice!
