Top Ten Comic Strips from the Sunday Roanoke Times: Hooray for Agnes

Greetings to our blog readers in Sweden, South Africa, and Cyprus......

It's perhaps fitting that this week's Sunday comic strip "Pearls Before Swine" which features its Goat character in the lime light (well in a dim limelight) is the top finisher in our weekly survey of Sunday comic strips from "The Roanoke Times" as there are some cool pygmy goats from Cameroon at the Mill Mountain Zoo in Roanoke, Va.

For those who have never traveled to Roanoke, it is a city of 100,000 people which is an hour north of Martinsville, Va., home of the Rev. Johnny Robertson who is rumored to have the most over-the-top Southern Baptist church in the world, well at least in Henry County.

Our third-place finisher is "Agnes," which is why we have an image of the late Agnes Moorehead who played the mother in the late 1960s sitcom "Bewitched."

Fifth place goes to Get Fuzzy, which has some knock knock jokes, so we went with an image of Mormons.

Liberal comedian Bill Maher is actually coming to Roanoke on Friday for the first time, we hope he really socks it to Donald Trump, who was brilliantly lampooned in today's (Monday) "Zippy the Pinhead."

Out Top 10 Favorite Comic Strips from the Roanoke Times (Oct. 27th edition)

This entry was supposed to be posted way back on Oct. 30th, but we got distracted, and yeah life happens. But, we are back now. And, we will resume where we left off, as we look at our ten favorite comic strips from the Oct.27th Sunday edition of "The Roanoke Times" in Roanoke, Va.

Sports Desk- Harvard Beats Yale 66-51

It may seem like we are capitalizing on the media sensation Jeremy Lin of the New York Knicks, but his alma mater Harvard University (23-3, 9-1 Ivy) is having an impressive season of their own.

The key game over the weekend was Harvard's home game against arch rival Yale. Harvard won the game 66-51 thanks in large part to Keith Wright who scored 10 points and had 8 rebounds for the Crimson.

Greg Managano of Yale lead the Bulldogs (17-7, 7-3 Ivy) with 22 points.

Harvard has two international players, including Steve Moundou-Missi (pictured here) a freshman forward from Cameroon and Ugo Okam, a sophomore center from Nigeria. The Crimson also have two players from North Carolina, where we are based. These include stand-out Brandyn Curry from Huntersville and Dee Giger from Arden.

Despite the setback, Yale did score a victory over Dartmouth (now 5-21, 1-9 Ivy) on the road, Friday night. The Bulldogs were lead by Austin Morgan who scored 17 points; Managano added 16.

The Ivy League Men's Basketball Player of the Week is Zack Rosen, a senior guard from Colonia, NJ, who plays for the Penn Quakers. Rosen scored 26 points in home win over Cornell and 14 points in home win against Columbia.

Friday Geo Quiz (July 2010 Only)

Well, we're tired kids.

But, we thought we'd post this entry for ninth grade students at William Byrd High School in Vinton, Va., near Roanoke, where my mother reportedly taught in 1968 (two years before I was born).

We are focusing on countries who have played in the current World Cup in South Africa with special geography quiz entries through the month of July. Ok, so we should have come up with it last month as The World Cup got away....

Anyway, here is our question. If you get it right, I may have to send you this Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle action figure that I got at an estate sale in Floyd, Va., which is sitting next to the computer, this past fall except for the fact that I've become quite attached to it!:

For those of you who may have actually flunked geography, Cameroon is central Africa. They actually speak French over there- zut alors!

Quote of the Week- Samuel Eto'o (Soccer Player from Cameroon)

We conclude this long series of quotes from 32 people associated with the 32 countries who are or in the case of Cameroon were competing in The World Cup.

Cameroon, which has become one of Africa's most traditional winning teams, failed to get into the second round this year mainly because they were in a group with lots of good teams, including Holland, Denmark and Japan.

But, we can still quote their star player Samuel Eto'o who until recently was playing for Spanish soccer power Barcelona. He now plays for the Italian team Internazionale.

Quote of the Week- Akira Kurosawa

Today's quote of the week is from the late, freat Japanese film director Akira Kurosawa (1910-1998). "Rashomon," which many consider to be his best film is celebrating its 60th anniversary. Kurosawa was also known for "The Seven Samurai," "Ikiru," "Ran" and "The Throne of Blood" among many others.

We are quoting 32 people from the 32 countries in the World Cup on both of our blogs. At last report, Japan was beating Cameroon 1-0 in their game today (we are 90 percent sure they won, but we don't want to offend anyone blogging in from central Africa in case we are wrong!).
