Last Ten Songs We've Heard on 98.7-SimonFM in Greesnboro, NC: Please Play Good Genesis Songs

Greetings to our beloved blog readers in Sweden, Costa Rica and Indonesia....

During the 1:00-2:00 p.m. hour (east coast America time), we were 'treated' to a mix of hip hop, disco, classic rock and kitsch pop thanks to 98.7-SimonFM (Greensboro, NC). The hour started with "I Can't Dance," a rare bland pop song from Genesis, a trio led in its later years by Phil Collins, a singer who wrote his signature solo song "I Can Feel It in the Air Tonight" after he came back to England from a tour of America to find she had been cheating on him. But, if anyone from Simon stumbles upon this blog, maybe they can play "Land of Confusion" or "No Reply at All" instead (yeah, of course, they won't pay attention to what we say, but..........)

Here are the last ten songs we listened to on Simon-FM:

1) "Refugee" Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. 1980

2) That's the Way (I Like It). KC and the Sunshine Band. 1975.

3) Another Brick in the Wall. Pink Floyd. 1979.

4) Don't Talk to Strangers. Rick Springfield (pict. bottom) 1982

5) Only the Good Die Young. Billy Joel (pict. center). 1977

6) Broken Wings. Mr. Mister. (pict. top) 1985

7) Someday. Nickelback. 2003.

8) Whole Lotta Love. Led Zeppelin. 1969

9) Every Little Step. Bobby Brown. 1989

10) I Can't Dance. Genesis. 1991

Top Ten Comics from Sunday, Jan. 25th Washington Post: Tough Competition

Greetings to our blog readers in New Zealand, France and Lithuania.

For the Sunday, Jan.5th edition of "The Washington Post," our favorite comic strip was "Brewster Rockit: Space Guy," followed by "Sherman's Lagoon" and the Danish import "WUMO," which made fun of pug dogs.

We don't have images of pugs, but we do have these: 1) "The Jetsons" (for "Brewster Rockit," which is a satirical science fiction comic strip); 2) the late Freddie Mercury of Queen (for "Knight Life," in which cartoonist Keith Knight admits that he can't get "Bohemian Rhapsody" out of his skull" and 3) a hermit crab for "Sherman's Lagoon."

Here is our top ten:

1) Brewster Rockit: Space Guy

2) Sherman's Lagoon

3) WUMO

4) Knight Life

5) Reply All

6) Doonesbury

7) Lio

8) Dustin

9) Speed Bump

10) Prickly City

Last Ten CDs We've Listened To: It's All New Wave To Me......

Greetings to our beloved blog readers in Scotland, Mexico and Serbia.......

Welcome to another entry on this blog, which will be 10 years old in September!

Our apologies to our friends in Bodrum, Turkey, a plush beach resort, which we highly recommend. We went with an image of Jaco Beach, Costa Rica (pict. bottom) on a coin toss.

The old AM clock radio is in reference to the last cd we listened to, but it's also a way for us to make fun of Rush Limbaugh, who is probably drinking shots of vodka with Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas at the Watergate Hotel in Washington, DC, as we are typing this (the two are actually close pals).

The middle image is of soccer cleats; our first instinct was to go with Real Madrid striker Gareth Bale, but that proved to be too complicated!

Here is the list....all of these cds are indeed in the New Wave genre:

1) Psychedelic Furs. "Talk. Talk. Talk" 1981

2) INXS. "Kick" 1987.

3) Wang Chung. "Points of the Curve." 1983

4) The Cure. "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me." 1987

5) New Order. "Republic" 1993.

6) Talking Heads. "True Stories" 1986.

7) Gary Numan. "Pleasure Principle." 1979

8) The Clash. Combat Rock. 1982

9) The Fixx. Reach the Beach. 1983.

10) The Police. Synchronicity. 1983.

Noon Rush Hour Tweets: Does God Decide if Tom Brady Throws Interceptions?

Greetings to our beloved blog readers in Wales, Dubai, and South Korea.....

We imagine folks are quite happy in Tunisia today as the national soccer team defeated Zambia 2-1 in the African Cup of Nations yesterday. Today, in Turkish soccer play, Trabzonspor defeated its fellow eastern Turkish side Sivasspor 3-1, thanks to two goals from Paraguay international Oscar Cardozo.

Our images above are of: 1) The Buffalo Bills, an American football team in Buffalo, NY; 2) The Mark Twain House in Hartford, Conn.; and 3) Cong. John Boehner (R-Ohio), who is the speaker of the house..........yes, we are surprised to be posting a tweet from him as well (this blog has a center-left bias, but then again, so does the truth).........

Here are tweets taken from the noon rush hour on the east coast of America:

1) The Hill (a newspaper that covers Congress): Sen. Lindsey Graham (D-SC) says...........'I'm well-qualified to be president'.....

2) UberFacts: One in four Americans believe that God decides who wins the Super Bowl (that is our reason for using the Bills, they are 0-4 in Super Bowls)

3) Chris Eliopolous (a cartoonist....yeah, we got his name spelled right, we think!): Sometimes it's hard to differentiate between a mentally disturbed man and a guy on his Bluetooth headset.

4) Politico: Bill and Hillary Clinton praise King Abdullah's 'humanitarian efforts.'

5) WNYC (New York's NPR station): "On March 22, the fare of a New York City bus or subway ride will increase by a quarter.........*sigh*....)

6) Speaker John Boehner: This pen is used to sign common sense job bills before sending them to the president's desk (hashtag: National Handwriting Day)

7) Peter Sciretta (tweeting from the Sundance Film Festival in Utah): The Bronze is a filthy R-rated SNL sketch at feature-film length. If that sounds like something fun, go see it. If not, avoid it (hashtag: Sundance)

8) Mike Reiss (Boston-based sports reporter): Darelle Revis of the Pats relayed how Tom Brady addressed players Thursday and talked about not letting deflate football story to be a distraction.

9) Sherine Tadros (Middle East-based tv journalist): Calling the late King Abdullah (of Saudi Arabia) a 'reformer' shows how far low the bar is in the region.

10) WXII 12 News (TV station in Winston-Salem, NC): At 12:40 p.m. (we have) icy mountain spots, glazing on trees, sleet now rain in the Triad, upper 30s.

11) Hartford Courant: Exodus of tens of thousands of residents to other states has lead to Connecticut's first population drop since 2008.

Best Comics from Sunday, Jan. 18th from GoComics: Gotta Love F-Minus

Greetings to our blog readers in Bosnia, Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia and........well, we're not sure how popular we are in eastern Europe/the Balkans/the former Yugoslavia anyway!

GoComics is the premiere comics distributor in America with over 200 comic strips, including "Garfield," "Dilbert" and "Get Fuzzy." We couldn't possibly have checked all their strips on Sunday, but from the 40-50 that we did check out, we were able to find ten which really stood out.

The images above are of: 1) Lucy from "Peanuts" actually for "The Argyle Sweater" which made fun of Charlie Brown, who will be the place kicker for the Seattle Seahawks for Super Bowl Sunday (yeah, no one in Macedonia will get that joke); 2) the cactus for "Reality Check" in which Bugs Bunny gets lost in the desert thanks to faulty GPS directions; and 3) a parking spots war photo for "F-Minus," the single-panel strip, which this week had a driver drop someone's hoodie in a parking spot to assure that the right person got it.

Here are the top ten:

*-comics in "The Washington Post" (Sunday edition)

#-comics in "The Roanoke Times" (Sunday edition)

1) The Argyle Sweater *

2) Reality Check

3) F-Minus

4) The Flying McCoys

Our Favorite Comics from Sunday, Jan. 18th from Comics Kingdom: Bleeker Rules Again.....

Greetings to our blog readers in Switzerland, Malaysia and Zimbabwe as well as those of you who reside in Cong. David Price's (D-NC) congressional district, which I believe includes Chapel Hill, Durham and Fayetville, so Cong. Price represents Chapel Hill on Capitol Hill (Stephan Pastis might like the pun, well maybe not!)....

"Pearls Before Swine," which is Pastis' comic strip is not actually distributed by Comics Kingdom, but "Hi and Lois" is. Today, we take a slight departure from the norm,  and focus on our favorite comic strips from the distributor rather than a given Sunday newspaper. This gives us a chance to rank "Zippy the Pinhead," one of our favorite comic strips that has a loyal cult following but is not in many newspapers, especially those in small markets, like (presumably) Altoona, Pa, Dayton, Ohio, and Charleston, W.Va.

This week, Bill Griffith, who draws "Zippy" featured an homage to the old "Nancy" comic strip from yesteryear.

Our images for today are from 1) bread bowls, which are featured in the Sunday comic strip for "Six Chix" where a cafĂ© is literally serving everything imaginable in a bread bowl, 2) "Are You Being Served?," an old English sitcom which our fellow blogger and friend Chris Knight from Reidsville, NC, adores for the comic strip "Retail" and 3) a shark for "Sherman's Lagoon."

Here is our Comics Kingdom top ten:

1) Bleeker the Rechargeable Dog

2) Bizarro

3) Zippy the Pinhead

4) Six Chix

5) Retail

6) Between Friends

7) Sherman's Lagoon

8) The Brilliant Mind of Edison Lee

9) Take It from the Tinkersons

10) Piranha Club
