PS: Kudos to the North Carolina Central Eagles. The other school in Durham, NC, (for those of you in Estonia, Duke University is that 'other school') won their regular season conference title with their 15th straight win. The Eagles had a home win last night over Savannah State 64-57 (OT). The team was lead in scoring by Jordan Parks and Jeremy Ingram, who scored 17 points each.

We're Back: With a List of the Worst Oscar-Nominated Films That Did NOT win Best Picture

Alas, we have not seen "Airport" (1970) nor "Doctor Dolittle" (1966), but we have seen our fair share of films that got Best Picture Oscar winners that were not worthy of those nominations. Of course, since this blog's editor Tilly Gokbudak is a Turkish-American, who gets 'top billing' will probably not be a surprise!

We're Back: With a List of the Best Oscar-Nominated Films That Did NOT Win Best Picture

Here are ten of our favorite films which were nominated for Best Picture, but didn't win the Academy Award. While researching this, I found out that the late Robert Altman's cinematic masterpiece "The Player" (1992) wasn't even nominated for Best Picture, though the second best film of that year "Unforgiven" (dir. Clint Eastwood) did win that award. Alas, "Unforgiven" doesn't make the cut.

Today, we quote past Winter Olympians, starting with Peggy Fleming, 65, the American gold medalist in figure skating at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, France.

This also gives us a chance to randomly mention last night's new gold medal champion Adelina Satnikova of Russia and Kim Yuna, the previous Olympic gold medalist from South Korea.

The Olympic Lists (9 of 10): Athletes from NATO member countries

Who is the man inside the skeleton helmet designed to look like a brain? He is one of the ten athletes we will list who are from NATO member nations. The union of nations which started from the Cold War now includes several countries from the now defunct  eastern bloc. Turkey is the lone Muslim NATO member. Alper Ucar, a men's ice skater who competed in ice dancing, is one of the six athletes from my late father's country. He was mentioned in an earlier blog entry.
