Top Ten Comic Strips from Comics Kingdom: Bleeker Wins the Blue Ribbon

Greetings to those of you visiting our blog tonight regardless if you are from Hagerstown, Maryland (home of the Hagerstown Suns baseball team), or Auckland, New Zealand.......

Comics Kingdom is a comic strip and features (crossword puzzles, Sudoku) distributor which has a blend of traditional comic strips like "Beetle Bailey" and "Blondie" as well as new comic strip aimed at younger demographics, including "Intelligent Life" which is sort of like a comic strip version of "The Big Bang Theory" that revolves around nerd life.

Our favorite Sunday comic strip from Comics Kingdom is "Bleeker the Rechargeable Dog" with a gorgeous illustration of a young boy and his sister going for a tumultuous canoe ride with their pet robots; it reminded us of the New River, which runs through West Virginia and rural southwestern Virginia.

Second place goes to "The Brilliant Mind of Edison Lee" which depicts what can go awry when a young boy plays with a rocket and a mouse is nearby. Third place went to "Bizarro" which mocked outdoors safety tips pamphlets which illustrated that when one comes across a grizzly bear all bets are off. We also enjoyed Bill Griffith as his cult favorite comic strip "Zippy the Pinhead" made fun of the Tea Party crowd and he did this without mentioning Ben Carson or Donald Trump!

Comic Strips Grand Slam (4 of 4): We Really, Really Like Bleeker the Rechargeable Dog

Personally, we think two of the best comic strips around are "Bleeker: The Rechargeable Dog" by Jonathan Mahood and "The Brilliant Mind of Edison Lee" by John Hambrook. But, alas promoting these great comic strips with their own image might be grounds for copyright infringement and since we don't make a dime for blogging, we are going to go with images of Cong. Eric Cantor (R-Va), the recipient of last week's Worst Week in Washington in "The Washington Post" (we asked Chris Cillizza, the political reporter who writes the piece to consider the Spanish ambassador this week, but alas, we got no response), Tim Howard, the goal keeper for Team USA who plays professionally for some team in England, and the late, great Jacques Cousteau instead.

We hope Mahood and Hambrook appreciate our efforts to go out of the way to avoid copyright infringement.

These strips are all in the Kings Features' comic wheel, which also includes "Barney Google and Snuffy Smith" from our good friend John Rose, alas his strip did not make our top ten (Note: These are last Sunday's strips, the new batch of brownies is already out of the even_ they won't get that joke in Dubai, will they?):

Best Comic Strips from King Features' Web Page: We Love Edison Lee

This image is in association with the comic strip "Bleeker," about a robot dog (no, not Astro from "The Jetsons") which revolved around a bouncing basketball, but our comic strip of the week is "The Brilliant Mind of Edison Lee."

PS: Kudos to the North Carolina Central Eagles. The other school in Durham, NC, (for those of you in Estonia, Duke University is that 'other school') won their regular season conference title with their 15th straight win. The Eagles had a home win last night over Savannah State 64-57 (OT). The team was lead in scoring by Jordan Parks and Jeremy Ingram, who scored 17 points each.

Top Ten Comics Not in The Roanoke Times: Kalimari, Please

Yes, this entry features an image of a squid; the last entry featured an image of a whale. So, there you have it: The Squid and the Whale!

We looked at some 40 comic strips not in "The Roanoke Times."

Our three favorites, included "Arctic Circle" where a squid comes out of nowhere in the final panel, "Lio," where a demented young boy is watching tv with his alien pals, and "The Brilliant Mind of Edison Lee," where the title character is a very sore loser at chess.

We also enjoyed "The Argyle Sweater" where Spongebob Square Pants makes an appearance, in, of all things, a police lineup!
