Potluck Quote of Day/Night (6 of 10): Jerry Seinfeld

A Writing entity on Twitter asked us to write a five-word sentence in which an athlete confronts an unexpected challenge. We came up with: "Simone Biles converts to Judoism." Biles is as even barefoot children in Malawi now know is American gymnast who has won four gold medals and one bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

As we were putting this together, we noticed they were once again playing chainsaw heavy metal on WKNC, the student-run college radio station for North Carolina State in Raleigh. Among the tunes they were playing on the station was "Fight Em Till You Can't" by Anthrax.

We have to wonder if this song or perhaps some hip hop was in Zlatan Ibrahimovic's I-Pad as he helped Manchester United, his new team, with two goals to defeat Southampton 2-0; now that's what we call an impressive debut. We have actually lost track of European soccer lately. In fact, we even have to ask Google if Turkish-German soccer star Mesut Ozil was still playing for Arsenal, one of MU's main rivals on the grass.

Perhaps some of you came across this blog out of indecision as to what to watch on Youtube. We can recommend a clip from "Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster" (1971). If that doesn't work, then check out a Quote of the Day from someone like Dr. Seuss, whom we are not quipping here. That honor goes to standup comic and former sitcom star Jerry Seinfeld, who will be performing in at least two swing state venues, including stops in Des Moines, Iowa, (Sept. 9th) and Toledo, Ohio (Oct. 7th).

Oh, we forgot to mention that Bette Davis is tomorrow's TCM Star of the Day: Her film "Noe Voyager" airs at 8:00 p.m., followed by many of her other performances.

Quote of the Day/Week- Bernardo Bertolucci

Bernardo Bertolucci, one of Italy's greatest living directors, is an Academy-Award winner who has also directed the Italian film "The Conformist" (1971) and the highly controversial film "Last Tango in Paris" (1973). He Oscared for "The Last Emperor" (1987).

My friend New York-based film critic Bilge Ebiri has an exceptional profile of Bertolucci in the Australian web journal "Senses of Cinema."

Here is Bertolucci's quip:

"I don't think you can in any way export culture with guns and tanks."

SIDEBAR: We were aware that Greece, obviously a country going through a very hard time right now, had a thriving heavy metal scene with bands like Acid Death, Black Winter and Rotting Christ.

But, there is apparently an all girls punk rock band which formed in Crete called Barbed Wire Dolls. The band is now based in Los Angeles, and they perform in my hometown of Roanoke, Va., at the Horseshoe tomorrow night.

We first heard of the Greek heavy metal bands through the North Carolina State student-run college radio station WKNC (88.1-Raleigh) which airs "Chainsaw Rock" with host Lucreita tonight at midnight.

In Greece's neighboring country of Turkey, a predominantly Muslim country where my late father Mehmet Gokbudak hailed from, heavy metal is also surprisingly popular, and there are local bands, such as Pentagram, which have large followings.

Even more astonishing is the fact that the Israeli-based heavy metal band Orphaned Land is also very popular in Turkey.

Happy National College Radio Day

Happy National College Radio Day. I co-hosted a Turkish music show on WUVT-FM (90.7-FM) in 1994, so I fully respect the hard work and dedication that all college radio djs put in. Today's Turkish music show on WUVT-FM is called "Turkish Music Hour" and it airs from 1:00-2:30 p.m. (yes, it is an ironic title since the show lasts an hour and a half). I still listen to the show, and I think it's quite well-done. The hosts have in fact thought me about the Turkish female pop singer Nil Karaibrahimgil who is apparently very popular now.

There is a Greek music show before the Turkish show, as was the case when my friend Bahadir and I co-hosted the show. And, it is also quite good.

Since I now live in North Carolina, I also want to mention four exceptional college radio stations between Greensboro and Raleigh. They include WKNC (North Carolina State), which has a great heavy metal show on Friday nights, WXDU (Duke University, pictured) which has a great folk/local music show hosted by Washboard Dave.

In addition, there is WXYC (UNC) and WUAG (UNC-Greensboro).

SIDEBAR: This was a good weekend for many ACC sports team in Virginia and North Carolina. In college football, Wake Forest pulled off a huge upset of Florida State by a 35-30 score. Similarly, the Virginia Tech Hokies were able to defend their home turf in an exciting 38-35 win over Miami (Fla).

Not that this is pick on the Miami Hurricanes Day, but the UNC Tarheels won a home volleyball in five sets over the Hurricanes yesterday. Emily McGee of the Tarheels was named ACC Volleyball Player of the Week. On Thursday, the Tarheels, which also have a Turkish player named Ece Taner, host the Virginia Tech Hokies, a team that features junior Liz Trinchere, who is an alumnus of my high school, Glenvar High School in Salem, Va.
