The Last 10 Cds We've Listened To: The Go-Gos and The Replacements

This is our first post on this blog since the shooting tragedy which took the life of Alison Parker, 24, a WDBJ-7 (CBS, Roanoke, Va.) news reporter, and video-photographer Adam Ward, 27, in the Smith Mountain Lake town of Moneta, Va. The assailant took his own life later in the afternoon due east of Front Royal, Va., some four hours away from the early morning murders.

Former "Roanoke Times" reporter and respected author Beth Macy wrote in "The New York Times" that the incident had brought the community of Roanoke together as well as 'the Roanoke diaspora' of folks who have moved to other areas. Though the issue of gun violence (a Glock was used in the homicides) has fully surfaced especially given that a gun control activist was actually handcuffed outside the Roanoke Civic Center where a gun show was still held over the weekend.

Ten Songs We Heard in One Hour on Simon-FM (Greensboro, NC): Do You Want New Drugs?

We learned while putting this entry together that Huey Lewis and the News is continuing its perennial North American summer tour with a stop in Camden, New Jersey, on August, 20th. The popular '80s band whose song "Hip to Be Square" was featured during a memorable scene with Christian Bale and Jared Leto in "American Psycho" will also be performing in Biloxi, Mississippi, on Oct. 10th.

The Republicans Presidential Candidates List: Best to Worst

As we are listening to REM's "It's the End of the World As We Know It (And, I Feel Fine)" on Simon-FM in Greensboro, NC, we start our list of the Republican candidates list from Best to Worst, which actually makes us soooo glad we are not Republicans here, though we wish Jim Gilmore, the former governor of our home state of Virginia well (he is currently dead last out of the 17 candidates)!

When he last attempted to run  for political office in the state against now Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), Gilmore got about 35-percent of the vote.

Last 10 CDs I've Listened To

I must profess this was a bit tougher to put together than I anticipated as I had to double-check which dates these albums were released. I actually first got the release years for The Replacements' album "Tim" and REM's record "Document" mixed up.

This week, REM, a band that along with the B-52s shaped and defined the Athens,Ga., music scene in the 1980s decided to call it quits after 31 years.

Here are the albums:

Status Update_ When Will E-Harmony Hook Me Up with an Asian Girl?

Status Update for 1/25/11: "I wonder when E-Harmony will hook me up with an Asian girl. Perhaps, the reason why I have this desire stems from my infactuation with the David Bowie song 'China Girl.' Shhhhhhhhhhh...."


I have been an E-Harmony member for almost two years now; it has been a mostly frustating experience.


One chief reason for this, besides all the normal things that go a wry when one is dating someone they don't know, is that they never quite match me with the right woman for my interests.

I must profess that I absolutely adore Asian girls, irregardless if they are Japanes, Chinese, Korean or even Malaysian.

I have never actually dated one though I made a futile attempt at trying to arrange a coffee date with an Asian-American girl several years ago.

The reason for this mgiht well stem from the David Bowie video for his 1983 hit "China Girl." In his recent memoir "Talking with Girls About Duran Duran," Rob Sheffield, who also writes for "Rolling Stone" said that he once told REM member Peter Buck that he was jealous of how girls liked REM when he was in high school.

Buck replied that he once felt the same way about David Bowie in the '70s!

Ironically, my mom is apparently in the process of trying to get her Vietnamese hair-stylist to set me up with a girl from Ho Chi Minh City; we'll see how that goes. Perhaps, I can stop in Hong Kong or Shanghai while I'm at it.

And, hopefully, it will be a more positive experience than the ones I've had with E-Harmony so far!
