Top Ten Horror Films of All Time

Since it is October, we thought we'd post an entry about the supposed Greatest Horror Films of All-Time. The Internet Movie Database in Seattle came up with this list based on member voting.

It's an interesting list (actually included 50 films with "Saw" taking the last spot), and we do agree with the Number One selection of Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho," though I was surprised that solid horror films like "Carrie" (well, ok it's a bit kitschy) and "Poltergeist" didn't make the full list.

But, here is the Top Ten.....perhaps not surprisingly, most of these films have been remade- some several times over:

Joe Scott will be presenting "Silence of the Lambs" as part of the horror film segment of his Mixed Tape Series at the Carousel Luxury Cinemas in Greensboro, NC, on Oct. 21. At last report, showtimes were 7:00 and 10:00 p.m.

In Roanoke, Va., my friend Jason Garnett screens "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" (of course we known the 1975 campy muscial cult classic with Susan Sarandon is not a horror movie!) on Oct. 30th at the Shadowbox Cinema at 10 p.m.

Program Reminder- Movie Show on WUAG-FM

My friend Joe Scott of Greensboro, NC, hosts a weekly college radio station show that is entirely dedicated to movie which is called "The Movie Show." The WUAG 103.1-FM show airs at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesdays as of this fall, and with the advent of modern technology, one can listen to the show from Trabzon, Turkey, or Capetown, South Africa. WUAG is the college radio station for UNC-Greensboro.

The Movie Show also sponsors special screenings at The Carousel Luxury Cinemas in Greensboro called The Mixed Tape Series. Next week's film is the John Cusack teen angst classic "Say Anything" which features a memorable with Peter Gabriel's song "In Your Eyes" in the background.

We forget which year the film was released (was it 1989?), but I know that both Joe and my friend Moviezzz (http://www.talkingmoviezzz.blogspot.com) know this. Alas, I don't have time to consult with them and frankly I'm getting very, very hungry.....

WUAG also has a local music show called "Radio Greensboro" which runs from 8-10 p.m. on Sundays. A similar show dedicated to music from musicians in the Raleigh-Chapel Hill area runs from 5-8 p.m. on Fridays on WKNC, the college radio station for North Carolina State University.

It's time for a gyro or fajita....

UPDATE: Since we were in a rush yesterday, we forgot to double-check to see if the Cusack image was up. Also, the screening in Greensboro for "Say Anything" is Thursday at 7:30 and 10 p.m. We were also unaware of how a tweet by Cusack, which we thought was very amusing, caused an uproar at Fox News!

50 Beers From Around the Globe- Cerveza Cristal (Chile)

This latest brew caused some confusion for me because not only is there a Cerveza Cristal in Chile, but there is also a beer with the same name in Peru and there might even be one in Cuba!

But, the one pictured here is (we believe) the Chilean brew. According to Wikipedia, Chile brews corn beer, known as chicha, in addition to beer from the traditional barley like Cerveza Cristal.

Beer started in Chile circa 1850 when German immigrants began to establish the first breweries in the country.

I could not find any info regarding this beer's availability here in the United States. But, amazingly enough, a blogger with a retired blog (no new entries since 2009) named "Your Liver Hates You" said that he found the Peruvian Cerveza Cristal at a gas station in Texas!

My friend Joe Scott and WUAG-FM, the student station of UNCG, will be presenting a screening of the Coens Brothers classic "The Big Lebowski" at The Carousel Luxury Cinemas on Thursday. The Greensboro, NC, theatre will screen the film at 7:30 and 10:00 p.m. There is a package with the film that includes bowling at Triad Bowling after the showings of the film.

Special Screenings- "Big Trouble in Little China"

My friend Joe Scott will be screening the John Carpenter-helmed film "Big Trouble in Little China" on March 4th (which happens to be my 40th birthday) at the Carousel Luxury Cinemas in Greensboro, NC. The showtimes for the film are 7:30 and 10:00 p.m.

"China" is part of the Mixed Tape Series, which started with "The Big Lebowski" last fall. Scott will show another Carpenter-Kurt Rusell collaboration the remake of "The Thing," (which I believe came out in 1987, and I think they are remaking that film yet again! The original film with James Arness of "Gunsmoke" fame came out in the fifties), on March 11th.

Carpenter and Russell also worked together on "Escape from New York" and its sequel "Escape from LA."

"China" also features the ever-sexy Kim Cattrall in one of her best post-'Porky's' films and cult actor James Hong as the evil David Lo Pa.

I must profess that it's been more than two decades since I've seen the film, but I found the following trivia about "China" on the Internet Movie Database:

-The body count is 46

-Russell was Carpenter's only choice, but the studio wanted Jack Nicholson or Clint Eastwood for the lead. Fortunately, both were involved with other projects.

-The post-production period was a mere four months!

-Carter Wong, who plays Thunder, actually worked as a martial arts instructor in Hong Kong.

-Cattrall wore green-eye contacts for the film.
